To optimize a healthcare website for AI search, make sure AI assistants can reach and read every important page, state your facts in plain text that matches your markup and listings, and build pages that answer the questions patients ask, then measure how assistants use them. Curve Compliance helps healthcare brands with that work. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. Curve AEO, the managed service, includes technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read and understand your content.

Want to know what AI assistants can and cannot read on your own site, and what to fix first? Book a call to see AI Visibility on your own questions, or to talk about the managed service.

Why AI search matters for a healthcare website

Google says AI Overviews now has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users (Google). It also says people ask more than a billion health questions on Search every day (Google).

Health searches are among the most likely to get an AI answer, though studies measure it differently. Each figure below comes from the study named, with its own sample.

StudyWhat it foundSample
ConductorAI Overviews appeared for 48.7% of page-one Google queries in its health care set, the highest of 10 industriesAbout 21.9 million US searches across 10 industries, September 15 to October 12, 2025
WebFXAI Overviews appeared in 51% of health-related searches130,070 US health queries, July 2025
BrightEdgeAI Overview presence reached 89% of the healthcare keywords it tracksTracked healthcare keyword set, December 2025
Ahrefs44.1% of medical YMYL queries triggered an AI Overview, more than double the rate across all keywords146 million SERPs, global, September 2025

The question's length matters too. In WebFX's data, health searches of seven or more words triggered AI Overviews 73.9% of the time, versus 35.8% for searches of one or two words (WebFX). Long, specific patient questions are where AI answers show up most.

Clicks follow the answer. In browsing data on Google searches across all topics, Pew found that people who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits (Pew). Seer Interactive found that being cited in an AI Overview delivers 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited (Seer). Being a cited source is the part you can work on.

Step 1: Let AI search reach your pages

Each AI search company publishes the crawlers it uses and how to allow them. OpenAI says "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links," and that "it can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update for our systems to adjust" (OpenAI). Anthropic and Perplexity publish the same kind of guidance for Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot (Anthropic, Perplexity). For Google, the first basic it lists for AI features is "Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" (Google).

Check the layer in front of robots.txt, too. Perplexity says that with a web application firewall, "you may need to explicitly allow Perplexity's bots to ensure they can access your content" (Perplexity).

Training crawlers are a separate choice. Blocking GPTBot or ClaudeBot is a decision about model training, and Google says its training and grounding control, Google-Extended, "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search" (Google). See which AI crawlers a healthcare website should allow.

Step 2: Keep key pages indexable, with snippets

Google's basic technical bar for its AI features: "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google). Its newer guide adds that "a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console" to be eligible (Google).

Snippet rules reach into AI answers. Google says nosnippet "will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode," and max-snippet "will also limit how much of the content may be used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode" (Google). Look for noindex, nosnippet or very short max-snippet values left on service, provider and location pages after a redesign.

Step 3: Put every important fact in readable text

Google lists "Making sure that important content is available in textual form" among the basics for its AI features (Google). Microsoft's Bing team is more specific: it warns against hiding answers in expandable menus because "AI systems may not render hidden content, so key details can be skipped," against putting key information only in images, and against relying on PDFs: "For critical details, use HTML to ensure clarity and better parsing" (Microsoft).

On healthcare sites, the usual gaps are an insurance list posted as an image, provider bios in a PDF, hours in a banner graphic and a services menu built only in JavaScript. Google says it "is able to process content within JavaScript as long as it isn't blocked," but that JavaScript frameworks make SEO "generally more complex" (Google).

Step 4: Structure pages the way answers are built

Microsoft says your page title, description and H1 "are important signals AI systems use to interpret purpose and scope," that headings act "like chapter titles that define clear content slices," and that Q&A formats "mirror the way people search" (Microsoft).

Google and Microsoft differ on how far to take this. Microsoft says assistants like Copilot "break content down, a process called parsing, into smaller, structured pieces" (Microsoft). Google says "There's no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it" and "There's no ideal page length" (Google). Both fit the same practice: clear sections under descriptive headings, with the direct answer near the top, written for patients first.

Step 5: Make your facts match everywhere

Your site, your markup and your listings should agree. Google asks you to make sure "your structured data matches the visible text on the page," and says "there's no special schema.org markup you need to add" for generative AI search (Google, Google). See schema markup for healthcare AI search.

Local details carry extra weight in healthcare. In rater8's 2026 survey, 55% of patients searching for a new doctor started with some version of "specialty near me" (rater8). In Yext's study of location-based questions, listings made up 52.61% of healthcare AI citations, the heaviest reliance on third-party listings of any industry it studied (Yext). Google says Merchant Center and Google Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results" (Google).

Google also keeps AI Overviews off many local health searches, though two BrightEdge studies from different dates give different figures. Its December 2025 report says "near me" and provider-finding queries reached 0% AI Overview coverage in 2025 (BrightEdge), while its January 2026 report, on 2,760 tracked keywords, shows 11% for healthcare "doctor near me" queries in December 2025 (BrightEdge). Assistants still answer those questions: OpenAI says ChatGPT may rewrite a "near me" question using an approximate location, such as turning it into "top restaurants San Francisco" (OpenAI). Name the cities and neighborhoods you serve on each location page. See AI visibility for multi-location groups.

Step 6: Build pages for the questions patients ask

Technical work only opens the door. Google says content that people find "unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions" in its guide (Google). For health topics, it adds that "the content must be highly accurate and consistent with established expert consensus" (Google).

Start with the pages that decide bookings: each service, each location, provider bios, the insurance you accept and how to book. Then add clinician-reviewed explainers for the questions patients ask before they choose, one strong page per topic rather than one per phrasing. See AEO content for healthcare and query fan-out for healthcare.

Step 7: Measure what AI search does with your site

Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted in Search Console, and that "when people click from search results pages with AI Overviews, these clicks are higher quality" (Google). Track the bookings those visits bring in your analytics.

AI assistants outside Google send less traffic but need watching. Conductor found AI referrals were 0.64% of all website traffic in the health care industry (Conductor), and Ahrefs found 50% to 83% of AI citations were gone the next day (Ahrefs), so measure answers over weeks, not once. See how to measure AI search traffic and AEO tracking for healthcare.

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

What You Get with Curve AEO:

  • AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
  • Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
  • Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
  • Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

AI Visibility also checks whether AI search can read your site, and what to fix. It catches what AI gets wrong about your practice, so you can correct it on the pages AI reads. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan. See AI Visibility in Curve. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Let AI search crawlers reach your pages, keep key pages indexable with snippets, put every important fact in plain text that matches your markup and listings, and publish clear pages that answer patients' questions. Then measure how AI assistants use those pages over time.

What is technical AEO?

Technical AEO is the site-level part of answer engine optimization: crawler access, indexing and snippet rules, readable text, page structure and consistent facts, so answer engines can read and cite your pages.

Do I need special schema markup for AI Overviews?

No. Google says there's no special schema.org markup you need to add for generative AI search (Google), but structured data that matches your visible text still helps with rich results.

Does nosnippet keep my pages out of AI Overviews?

It can. Google says nosnippet will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google), so check that key pages carry no stray nosnippet rule.

Can AI assistants read PDFs and images?

Sometimes, but don't rely on it. Microsoft's Bing team says to avoid relying on PDFs for core information and to present critical details in HTML (Microsoft).

How long does ChatGPT take to see a robots.txt change?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust (OpenAI).

Can Curve make the technical fixes for us?

Yes. With Curve AEO, Curve's team makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site, and if your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes.
