AEO tracking means measuring how often AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude name and cite your brand for the questions patients ask, whether what they say about you is accurate, and how many visits and bookings those answers bring. This guide covers what to measure, how to set up a tracker and what goes in a monthly AEO report, with healthcare data throughout. Curve Compliance helps healthcare marketers do this. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. With Curve AEO, the managed service, a team handles the strategy and execution for you.

Why AEO tracking matters in healthcare
AI answers now shape which provider a patient picks. Among patients who searched for a new doctor in the past year, 36% said AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude influenced their decision. Among patients who used AI to research providers, 66% said they had encountered incorrect provider information from an AI tool (rater8). Neither fact shows up in a rankings report.
Industry averages will not do the job either, because they depend on who is counting. Here is how often AI Overviews appear in five published studies, four of them on health searches and one, Pew's, across all topics:
| Study | AI Overview rate | What was measured | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductor | 48.7% | Page-one Google queries in its health care set, drawn from about 21.9 million US Google searches across all 10 industries it studied, September to October 2025 | Conductor |
| BrightEdge | 89% | BrightEdge's tracked healthcare keyword set, December 2025 | BrightEdge |
| WebFX | 51% | 130,070 US health-related searches, July 2025 | WebFX |
| Ahrefs | 44.1% | Medical "Your Money or Your Life" queries in a database of 146 million desktop SERPs, September 2025 | Ahrefs |
| Pew Research Center | 18% | All Google searches made by 900 US adults, all topics, March 2025 | Pew |
What it means for you: the rate that matters is the one for your own questions. Track a fixed set of patient questions and the trend becomes yours, not an industry average.
The AEO metrics to track
Seven numbers cover most of what a healthcare marketer needs: three for visibility, two for quality, two for results.
| Metric | What it tells you | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Mention rate | How often AI answers name your brand | Questions where competitors are named and you are not |
| Citation rate | How often answers cite or link your site | Pages AI reads but rarely links |
| Share of voice | Your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with | Who leads each topic |
| Accuracy | Whether AI states your hours, addresses, insurance and services correctly | Errors that send patients elsewhere |
| Cited sources | Which sites AI relies on for your questions | Directories and publishers that stand in front of your own pages |
| AI referral visits | Visits from people who click a link in an AI answer | Which assistants and pages send them |
| Bookings | Appointments and leads from those visits | The questions and pages that bring patients |
Read them together. A rising mention rate with flat bookings tells you to look at what happens after the answer. For definitions, see what AI visibility is; for the competitive view, see AI share of voice.
Step 1: Build the question set
A tracker is only as good as its questions. Build them from what patients ask your front desk, your intake forms and your reviews. Cover each service line and each area you serve, and mix three kinds:
- Unbranded. "Best pediatric dentist near me" or "where to get a sports physical in Tampa." These decide whether you are considered at all.
- Comparison. "Clinic A or clinic B for knee replacement." These show who AI favors.
- Branded. "Does [your clinic] take Medicare" or "[your clinic] reviews." These show whether AI gets your facts right.
Local questions need extra care. 55% of patients searching for a new doctor start with some version of "specialty near me" (rater8), yet Google shows fewer AI Overviews on local health searches: in WebFX's data, queries with a location triggered AI Overviews 35.8% of the time, versus 54.2% for queries with no brand or location (WebFX). Track local questions in the assistants, not only in Google.
Then hold the list steady. Add new questions in batches and keep the old ones, so a change in the numbers reflects a change in the answers, not in what you asked.
Step 2: Choose the assistants
Patients use more than one. Among recent AI health users, West Health-Gallup found 61% used general chatbots like ChatGPT or Copilot, and 55% used AI built into web search, such as Google's AI summaries (Gallup). Google says AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users, and AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion (Google).
| Assistant | Share of AI referral traffic to health care websites | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 83.8% | Conductor |
| Perplexity | 7.8% | Conductor |
| Copilot | 4.7% | Conductor |
| Gemini | 2.8% | Conductor |
Start with ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, then add Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot. Note whether each answer used live web search. Semrush found ChatGPT enabled web search on 34.5% of queries as of February 2026, "meaning most responses still rely on training data alone" (Semrush).
Step 3: Check often enough to see a trend
AI answers change from day to day. Ahrefs tracked about 37,500 citations for 20 days and found 50% to 83% disappeared the next day, though about 75% of those came back within 20 days. Its advice: "Don't judge AI visibility from one check." (Ahrefs)
Web search use swings too: Semrush saw ChatGPT's share of search-enabled sessions range from as low as 15% to as high as 66.3% over its study (Semrush). Ask each question repeatedly, compare averages across weeks rather than single days, and treat small moves as noise until they hold.
Google adds a caution for every tool: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems" (Google). Trackers work by asking real questions and reading the answers, so judge one by how consistently it checks and whether it shows you the answers behind the numbers.
Step 4: Connect visibility to visits and bookings
Visibility is the leading signal; bookings are the result. AI referrals made up 0.64% of all website traffic for the health care industry in Conductor's benchmarks (Conductor), and clicks undercount AI's influence. Pew found that, across all topics, Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, versus 15% when no summary appeared, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits (Pew Research Center).
Being cited still pays. Seer Interactive found that being cited in an AI Overview brings 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, though still 38% fewer than when no AI Overview appears (Seer Interactive).
How well AI visitors convert depends on the study. Adobe found AI-referred visits to US retail sites converted 90% better than non-AI traffic in September 2026 (Adobe), while Amsive's study of 54 websites found LLM referrals converted at 4.87% and organic search at 4.60%, a difference that was not statistically significant (Amsive). Neither study is specific to healthcare, so your own booking data is the number to trust.
For Google's AI features, Google says to "use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console" (Google), and notes that sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic there (Google). For other assistants, track referral visits in your analytics and follow them to bookings, keeping patient data out of ad and analytics tools. See HIPAA-compliant AI visibility tracking and AI search traffic to bookings.
What to put in a monthly AEO report
- The headline trend. Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice for the whole question set, against last month.
- By question group. The same numbers by service line, area and question type.
- Competitors. Who AI names instead of you, and on which questions.
- Accuracy. What AI got wrong about you, and what you corrected.
- Work shipped. Pages published or fixed, and what changed for the questions they target.
- Results. Visits from AI assistants and the bookings they brought.
- Next steps. The handful of changes planned for next month.
Keep it to one page leadership can read quickly, and keep the definitions the same every month so the trend means something.
Common AEO tracking mistakes
- Judging from one answer. A single screenshot is a sample of one.
- Tracking only branded questions. The test is whether AI recommends you when patients do not use your name.
- Using rankings as a proxy. Across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, Ahrefs found only 12% of cited links, on average, ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt (Ahrefs).
- Counting clicks only. Much of AI influence never shows up as a click.
- Mixing studies. Industry rates come from different methods; compare like with like.
- Ignoring accuracy. A mention with the wrong hours or insurance can send a patient to the wrong door.
What This Looks Like in Practice
In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, Curve's team tracked the questions buyers ask AI assistants, found where competitors were named and the brand wasn't, and published pages to close those gaps. About five weeks in:
- AI assistants named or cited the brand in 53% of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions (104 of 196), across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude.
- Across 184 real buyer questions and 912 AI answers, its site was cited in 236 answers, more than any competitor's and more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one (89).
- 47 of the new pages were already cited by AI assistants within six days of going live.
- One new page brought in more than half of the brand's unpaid ChatGPT visits in its first week.
How Curve Compliance helps
AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.
What You Get with Curve AEO:
- AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
- Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
- Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
- Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.
AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask. You see mention rate (how often AI answers name you), citation rate (how often they cite your site) and share of voice (your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with). It ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. It measures what each published piece changes.
With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report.
It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is AEO tracking?
AEO tracking is measuring how often AI assistants name and cite your brand for the questions your patients ask, whether their answers about you are accurate, and how many visits and bookings those answers bring. It shows whether your answer engine optimization work is paying off.
What is an AEO tracker?
An AEO tracker asks AI assistants a fixed set of questions again and again and records who they name and cite. Look for one that covers the assistants your patients use, checks consistently, and ties what it finds to visits and bookings.
Which AEO metrics matter most in healthcare?
Mention rate, citation rate and share of voice show visibility; accuracy shows whether AI gets your facts right; AI referral visits and bookings show results. Accuracy deserves extra weight: 66% of patients who used AI to research providers had seen incorrect provider information (rater8).
How often should you check AI answers?
Often, and never just once. Ahrefs found 50% to 83% of AI citations are gone the next day and suggests counting how many of the last seven days you were cited for each question (Ahrefs).
Can Google Search Console track AEO?
For Google's own AI features, Google points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console (Google). ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and other assistants need separate tracking.
What should an AEO report include?
The trend in mention rate, citation rate and share of voice, results by question group, competitors, accuracy fixes, the work shipped, and AI visits and bookings.
Can Curve track AEO for us?
Yes. AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask, and with Curve AEO, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call each month and sends a one-page report. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.
