AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini name or cite your brand when people ask about what you offer, and Curve Compliance measures it with mention rate, citation rate, share of voice and the visits and bookings AI sends you. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service.

Want these numbers for your own practice? AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask. It ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. Book a call to see AI Visibility on your own questions, or to talk about the managed service.

Why AI visibility matters in healthcare

Many patients ask AI before they call a provider. KFF's March 2026 poll found “about a third (32%) of adults are turning to AI for health information and advice”, and “About six in ten (58%) adults who used AI for physical health advice in the past year say they later followed up with a doctor or health care provider after consulting an AI tool” (KFF). OpenAI says “More than 40 million turn to ChatGPT every day with healthcare questions” (OpenAI). When an assistant names three clinics and yours is not one of them, that patient may never reach your website.

The metrics that matter

AI visibility starts with the answers themselves and ends with the patients they send you. Four measures describe it:

MetricWhat it measuresHow to read it
Mention rateHow often AI answers name youYour reach across the questions patients ask
Citation rateHow often AI answers cite your site as a sourceWhether assistants use your own pages as evidence
Share of voiceYour share of the mentions among the brands you compete withYour standing against the practices patients compare you with
Visits and bookings from AIThe visits AI answers send to your site, and the bookings they lead toWhether AI answers bring in patients who book

Mention rate and citation rate are different

An answer can name you without citing your site, or cite one of your pages without naming you. The two rates answer different questions: whether patients hear your name, and whether assistants use your pages as a source. Track both, because a page that is cited but never named does less for you than it could.

Share of voice needs a competitor list

Share of voice only means something against the brands patients compare you with: the practices nearby, the larger groups in your region and the telehealth brands that answer the same questions. Choose that list with care, because a list that leaves out your real rivals flatters you. See AI share of voice.

Look at each question, not only the totals

Rates summarize. To act, look question by question: which brands each answer names, which pages it cites, and where a competitor is named and you are not. Those gaps show where a new or better page is worth writing.

Why one answer is not a measure

Ask an assistant the same question twice and you can get two different answers, so a single answer is a weak measure. Google's AI Overviews also come and go: Google says “AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger” (Google Search Central). Look at many answers over time and judge the trend, not one screenshot.

Visits and bookings from AI

Mentions are the start. The business result is a patient who books. Some patients click a link in an AI answer and land on your site. Others read the answer and later search your name or type your web address, so part of what AI does for you shows up as branded and direct visits. How AI visibility relates to SEO, AEO and GEO

Google describes AEO and GEO as terms for work “specifically focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences”, and adds: “From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” (Google Search Central). A 2023 research paper introduced “Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the first novel paradigm to aid content creators in improving their content visibility in generative engine responses” (arXiv). AI visibility is the measurement side of that work. It tells you whether the pages you publish show up in the answers. See AEO vs GEO vs SEO for healthcare.

How to measure AI visibility

  • Pick the questions. List the questions patients ask before they book, by service and by place. Include comparison questions that name you and a rival.
  • Name your competitors. Share of voice only means something against a list.
  • Check the assistants your patients use. One answer is noise. Regular checks across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini show a trend.
  • Connect answers to visits and bookings. Count AI-referral visits and the bookings they lead to, not only mentions.
  • Check Google's own report. Google suggests you “use the Generative AI performance report” in Search Console to see how your content performs in its generative AI features (Google Search Central).

What This Looks Like in Practice

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, Curve's team tracked the questions buyers ask AI assistants, found where competitors were named and the brand wasn't, and published pages to close those gaps. About five weeks in:

  • AI assistants named or cited the brand in 53% of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions (104 of 196), across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude.
  • Across 184 real buyer questions and 912 AI answers, its site was cited in 236 answers, more than any competitor's and more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one (89).
  • 47 of the new pages were already cited by AI assistants within six days of going live.
  • One new page brought in more than half of the brand's unpaid ChatGPT visits in its first week.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. It shows your mention rate (how often AI answers name you), citation rate (how often they cite your site) and share of voice (your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with), next to the visits and bookings AI sends you. It shows where competitors are named and you aren't, who leads each topic, and which sources AI cites. It catches what AI gets wrong about your practice, so you can correct it on the pages AI reads.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report.

AI Visibility is built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan. It turns what it finds into a weekly roadmap sized to what your clinicians can publish, with medical topics flagged for clinical review. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started. See the AI Visibility product page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini name or cite your brand when people ask about what you offer. Curve Compliance measures it with mention rate, citation rate, share of voice and the visits and bookings AI sends you.

What is a good AI mention rate?

It depends on the questions you track and how many brands the answers name. The useful comparisons are against the practices patients weigh you against and against your own earlier results, so look at share of voice and the trend over time.

How is AI visibility different from SEO rankings?

A ranking is a position in a list of links. An AI answer is one composed reply that names a few brands and may cite a few pages, and it can change from one ask to the next. Google still treats optimizing for its AI features as SEO (Google Search Central), so the same pages serve both.

What is an AI visibility score?

Some tools roll several signals into one number. Semrush, for example, offers an “AI Visibility Score” as a benchmark of a brand's overall presence in AI search (Semrush). Curve's AI Visibility shows mention rate, citation rate and share of voice next to the visits and bookings AI sends you, so you can see what moved and what it brought in.

How often should AI visibility be measured?

Often enough to see a trend, because one answer is a weak measure. With Curve's AI Visibility, every week you get a plain-language summary of what changed, and a one-page report to share. With the managed service, Curve's team also walks you through your results on a call each month.

Does Google Search Console show AI visibility?

For Google Search, yes. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode “are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console” (Google Search Central), and it points to a Generative AI performance report (Google Search Central). For other assistants you need a tool that asks them directly.

Does AI visibility lead to bookings?

It can. Patients who click a link in an AI answer reach your site, and some of them book. Curve's AI Visibility ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you, and it measures what each published piece changes.

Can Curve measure AI visibility for us?

Yes. Your team can use AI Visibility as a feature in Curve Compliance, or have Curve's team run it for you as a managed service. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started. See the AI Visibility managed service.
