AI Overviews statistics for healthcare show that Google's AI summaries appear on 48.7% of the page-one Google queries in Conductor's health care set, the highest of the 10 industries it studied (Conductor), and on 89% of the healthcare keywords BrightEdge tracks (BrightEdge). They lean on large health publishers, and they change how often patients click through to the pages below them. This page collects the AI Overviews data healthcare marketers need, with each study's method, so you can see where the numbers agree and where they do not. Curve Compliance helps healthcare brands track how often Google's AI Overviews and other AI answers name them. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. The managed service is Curve AEO, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

This is one of three deeper roundups that sit under AI search statistics for healthcare marketers. Curve AEO tracks how often AI answers, including AI Overviews, name your brand.

Key takeaways

  • Reach is huge. Google says AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users (Google).
  • Health gets more AI Overviews than most topics. Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 44.1% of medical YMYL queries, more than double the 20.5% rate across all keywords (Ahrefs).
  • Clinical questions are nearly all covered. In BrightEdge's tracked set, treatment queries showed AI Overviews 100% of the time and symptom queries 93% (BrightEdge).
  • Local provider searches mostly are not. BrightEdge's healthcare data shows few or no AI Overviews on "near me" provider searches (BrightEdge), and across all topics only 7.9% of local searches trigger one (Ahrefs).
  • Longer questions trigger more. Health searches of seven or more words triggered AI Overviews 73.9% of the time (WebFX).
  • Ranking is not the same as being cited. About 24% of healthcare AI Overview sources also rank in Google's top 10 (BrightEdge).
  • Patients trust them more than other results. 37% of patients picked the AI Overview as the part of Google's results they trust most when searching for care, ahead of organic links at 20% (rater8).

Google's usage figure comes from its own comparison of people shown AI Overviews with people who were not, so it is Google's claim rather than an outside measurement (Google). Among recent AI health users, AI in web search (55%) was nearly as common as general chatbots such as ChatGPT or Copilot, at 61% (Gallup).

What it means for healthcare marketers: for many patients, the AI Overview is their first contact with AI health information, whether or not they ever open a chatbot.

How often AI Overviews appear on healthcare searches

Each study counts on a different set of searches, which is why the rates range so widely. Read each one with its method.

WebFX found health had the highest AI Overview rate of any industry in its analysis of 2.37 million U.S. search queries, at 51.6% (WebFX). BrightEdge reports healthcare coverage grew from 59% to 89% over two years in its tracked set (BrightEdge). The 2026 preprint used benchmark questions rather than real search logs, many of them several sentences long, so its 96.4% is not a search-wide rate (Agnoli et al.).

Rates also move. Semrush found AI Overviews on 6.49% of queries in January 2025, 24.61% in July and 15.69% in November. Comparing March with November 2025, it named Health among the industries with the greatest decreases in AI Overview share, though another section of the same page still says Health saw a huge rise (Semrush). Across all industries, BrightEdge saw presence grow from roughly 30% to 48% of its tracked queries over the year to February 2026 (BrightEdge).

What it means: on informational health searches, plan as if an AI Overview will appear. Which keyword set you track decides the rate you will see.

Which health searches trigger AI Overviews

BrightEdge's December 2025 healthcare data shows clinical content near full coverage, and local provider searches near none (BrightEdge).

"Near me" and provider-finding queries0% (100% two years earlier); 11% in a separate BrightEdge studyBrightEdge; BrightEdge

Two BrightEdge studies from different dates differ on local searches: its 18-month page shows "doctor near me" and "urgent care near me" type queries at 11% in December 2025 (BrightEdge). Across all industries, Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 7.9% of local searches versus 22.8% of non-local ones (Ahrefs). BrightEdge also reports that self-harm, eating disorder names, crisis terms and addiction queries stayed excluded from AI Overviews in all three years it tracked (BrightEdge).

Query wording matters as much as topic. WebFX found health searches of seven or more words triggered AI Overviews 73.9% of the time, against 35.8% for one or two words. Informational health queries triggered them 66.9% of the time, commercial 45.4%, transactional 35.3% and navigational 14.1%. Queries with a location (such as "dermatologist chattanooga") triggered them 35.8% of the time, against 54.2% for queries with no brand or location (WebFX).

Pew saw the same pattern across all topics: just 8% of one or two word searches produced an AI summary, against 53% of searches with 10 words or more, and 60% of searches that began with question words such as "who," "what," "when" or "why" (Pew Research Center). Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 57.9% of question queries (Ahrefs).

What it means: your condition, treatment and "what to expect" pages compete inside AI Overviews, while "near me" searches still run mostly through the map and local results. Treat them as two jobs. For the AI Mode side, see Google AI Mode for healthcare.

What AI Overviews cite in health

In pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and life sciences, AI Overview citations were highly fragmented, with Merck Manuals on top at .10%. News content was the most cited page type in health care AI Overviews, with over 46,000 pages cited, ahead of blog pages at just over 36,000 (Conductor).

Across all topics, Pew found 6% of the sources linked in AI summaries were .gov websites, against 2% in standard results. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of AI summary sources and 17% of standard result sources. 88% of AI summaries cited three or more sources, and the median summary was 67 words long (Pew Research Center). In Ahrefs' November 2026 snapshot of U.S. AI Overviews across all topics, YouTube led with 24.5% of citations among the top 50 sources, and Healthline was the top health site at number 13 with 0.7% (Ahrefs).

The 2026 audit found AI Overviews overrepresented commercial health publishers such as WebMD and Healthline at the expense of academic and government sources (Agnoli et al.). Freshness helps less here than in chatbots: AI Overviews cite content that is 16 days older than the organic results on average (Ahrefs).

What it means: a top ranking helps but is not enough. Pages that answer one question clearly, cite their own sources and carry clinical review give AI Overviews something to quote. See how to rank in AI Overviews and where AI gets healthcare answers.

What AI Overviews do to clicks

Fewer people click when an AI Overview appears: Ahrefs found it correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page (Ahrefs). The full click data, including what being cited is worth, is in zero-click searches in healthcare.

How accurate health AI Overviews are

The 2026 audit of 3,611 health questions, a preprint not yet peer reviewed, used GPT-4.1 to grade AI Overviews against physician-written rubrics and found they earned 38.2% of available points (accuracy 54.2%, completeness 21.6%). An estimated 56.7% of cited statements were supported by their cited page, and 20.8% of statements were factual claims with no citation. Where a rubric anticipated a specific inaccurate or potentially harmful claim, 22.2% of AI Overviews contained it (Agnoli et al.).

An audit of 1,508 baby care and pregnancy searches, accepted at a peer-reviewed conference, found medical safeguards in just 11% of AI Overviews, and the AI Overview and featured snippet on the same page were inconsistent in 33% of cases (Hu et al.). Google said soon after AI Overviews launched in the U.S. that it found a content policy violation on "less than one in every 7 million unique queries on which AI Overviews appeared," and that for health it "launched additional triggering refinements" (Google). Policy violations are not the same as factual errors.

What it means: patients read these summaries as the answer. Clear, clinician-reviewed pages with named sources give Google better material to quote.

What to do with these numbers

  1. List the questions that matter. Pick the condition, treatment and "what to expect" questions your patients search, in full sentences.
  2. Check which ones show an AI Overview. Record whether your site is cited, and which sites are.
  3. Fix the pages AI reads. Give each page one clear answer near the top, sources, an author and clinical review.
  4. Keep local listings accurate. Provider searches still run through the map and local results.
  5. Measure over time. Citations change week to week, so track trends, not single checks. See AI Overview tracking for healthcare.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask.

What You Get with Curve AEO:

  • AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
  • Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
  • Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
  • Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.

It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan. It catches what AI gets wrong about your practice, so you can correct it on the pages AI reads.

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.
