An AI Overview tracker asks Google the questions your patients ask and records whether the AI Overview and the AI Mode answer name or cite your practice. Curve Compliance's AI Visibility shows how often both of Google's AI surfaces, and other AI assistants, name and cite your practice for those questions, and ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode “surface relevant links to help people find the information they're looking for quickly and reliably.” Both “may use a "query fan-out" technique,” which Google describes as “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources” to build a response. Google also says “AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary” (Google Search Central, AI features and your website). That last line is why a tracker has to check both. Being cited in one tells you little about the other.

Eligibility is plain: “To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet,” and “There are no additional technical requirements” (Google). Google's newer optimization guide adds that a site must be “included in Search generative AI features in Search Console” to be eligible (Google, optimizing for generative AI features). Inclusion is “the default control for all properties” (Search Console Help). For what makes a page worth citing, see how healthcare marketers win the AI Overview and query fan-out.

The controls that decide whether Google can use your page

Several settings on your side change what AI Overviews and AI Mode can show. Each row below is in Google's own words.

ControlWhat Google says it doesSource
robots.txt for GooglebotIt “is the control for site owners to manage access to how their sites are crawled for Search.”AI features and your website
nosnippetIt applies to “AI Overviews, AI Mode” and “will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.”Robots meta tag rules
max-snippetIt “will also limit how much of the content may be used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.”Robots meta tag rules
noindex“To block your content from appearing in Google Search completely, use noindex.”Search generative AI control
Search generative AI control (exclude)“If you exclude your site, links to your site and your site's content won't appear in Search generative AI features.”Search generative AI control
Google-ExtendedSearch Console Help says to use it “to limit training of the models used to generate responses in Search generative AI features.” It “does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search.”Google's common crawlers; Search generative AI control

You may have good reasons to limit snippets on a page you don't want summarized. Just check that the service pages you do want cited don't carry them by accident. Curve Compliance's AI Visibility checks whether AI search can read your site, and what to fix.

Weeks with no AI Overview

Google says “AI Overviews are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don't trigger” (Google). Its help page for searchers puts it this way: “You'll find AI Overviews in your Google Search results when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful” (Google Search Help, AI Overviews). AI Mode has its own fallback: “In some cases, AI Mode will provide a set of web links if there's not high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response” (Google Search Help, AI Mode).

So when you check by hand, note which weeks Google showed an AI Overview for each question, not only what it said. A question that rarely triggers one matters less for AI Overviews than a question that triggers one every week, and in the weeks with no Overview the patient sees the classic results, where your regular listing still does the work.

What Search Console shows

Google says “sites appearing in AI features (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode) are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console,” within the “Web” search type of the Performance report (Google). Search Console also has a Generative AI performance report, and its help page says “As of August 31, 2026, we've rolled out these insights to all websites worldwide.” It counts impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, where “Impressions are how many times links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search,” and it groups data by pages, countries, dates and devices (Search Console Help).

Two counting rules matter for healthcare reports. For AI Overviews, “An AI Overview occupies a single position in search results, and all links in the AI Overview are assigned that same position.” For AI Mode, “If a user asks a follow-up question within AI Mode, they are essentially performing a new query” (Search Console Help, how clicks and impressions are counted).

Search Console tells you which of your pages earned impressions in Google's AI features. To know which patient questions produce an answer that names you, which name a competitor instead, and which sources Google leaned on, you ask the questions and read the answers. That is the job of a tracker, and the two views work best side by side.

What a healthcare AI Overview tracker should record

  • Both Google surfaces. The AI Overview on the results page and the AI Mode answer, kept separate.
  • Named and cited. Whether the answer names your practice, and whether it cites a page on your site.
  • The competitor that won. Which other practice the answer named, and the sources it cited.
  • The city. Local questions written with the city in them, the way a patient there would ask.
  • Change over time. The same questions checked every week, so you read a trend rather than a single answer.
  • Visits and bookings. The visits from people who clicked a link in an AI answer, and the bookings those visits led to.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask. It shows your mention rate (how often AI answers name you), citation rate (how often they cite your site) and share of voice (your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with), and it ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you.

AI Visibility also turns what it finds into a weekly roadmap sized to what your clinicians can publish, with medical topics flagged for clinical review. Every week you get a plain-language summary of what changed, and a one-page report to share. See also AI share of voice and what AI visibility is.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

AI Visibility is built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI Overview tracker?

An AI Overview tracker asks Google the questions your patients ask and records whether the AI Overview, and the AI Mode answer, names or cites your practice. Curve Compliance's AI Visibility shows how often both name and cite your practice, alongside other AI assistants.

How do I know if my page is in an AI Overview?

Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page (Search Console Help). To see which patient questions name your practice or a competitor, ask the questions themselves and read the answers.

Does Search Console show AI Overview traffic?

Yes. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode “are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console” (Google), and the Generative AI performance report breaks out those impressions (Search Console Help).

Does nosnippet remove my page from AI Overviews?

It stops the page being a direct input. Google says nosnippet “will also prevent the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode” (Google), and a supporting link must be eligible to be shown with a snippet (Google).

Is AI Mode tracked separately from AI Overviews?

It should be. Google says the two “may use different models and techniques, so the set of responses and links they show will vary” (Google). A result in one tells you little about the other.

Why didn't Google show an AI Overview for my question?

Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems decide they add something to classic Search, so they “often don't trigger” (Google). For those questions, patients see the classic results, so your regular listing still matters.

Can I track AI Overviews by city?

Yes. Write the city into the question, the way a patient there would ask it, and check one version for each city you serve.

Is AI Visibility a Curve feature or a managed service?

Both. You can use AI Visibility as a feature in Curve Compliance, or Curve's team can run it for you as a managed service. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.
