To rank in AI Overviews, a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet in Google Search, then be a helpful, reliable, people-first answer to the question, because Google says there are no extra requirements beyond normal SEO (Google Search Central). Curve Compliance helps healthcare brands see how often Google's AI answers name and cite them, and improve it. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. The managed service is Curve AEO, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you. This guide covers which healthcare searches show AI Overviews, what gets cited, and a plan you can start this month.

How often healthcare searches show an AI Overview
Conductor and WebFX each found health had the highest AI Overview rate of the industries they studied, but the exact share depends on who is counting and how. Here is every major estimate side by side, with its method.
| Study | AI Overview rate | What was measured | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductor | 48.7% | Page-one Google queries in Conductor's health care set, September 15 to October 12, 2025, drawn from about 21.9 million US searches across 10 industries | Conductor |
| WebFX | 51% | 130,070 US health-related searches, July 2025 | WebFX |
| Ahrefs | 44.1% | Medical "Your Money or Your Life" queries in 146 million desktop results, September 2025, global | Ahrefs |
| BrightEdge | 89% | The healthcare keywords BrightEdge tracks, December 2025, up from 59% two years earlier | BrightEdge |
| Pew Research Center | 18% | All Google searches by 900 US adults, March 2025, all topics | Pew |
The gap is mostly method. BrightEdge follows a fixed set of healthcare keywords, and its January 2026 page puts healthcare at 88% on 2,760 keywords (BrightEdge). Conductor samples page-one queries across 10 industries, WebFX sampled 130,070 health searches, and Pew counts every Google search its panel of US adults made. Rates also move: Semrush's 2025 study named Health among the industries with the greatest decreases in AI Overview share (Semrush). Even so, every health-specific estimate above sits well above Pew's 18% for all searches.
Which healthcare searches trigger them
AI Overviews cluster on informational health questions. In BrightEdge's December 2025 data, they appeared on 100% of treatment queries, 98% of pain-related queries and 93% of symptom queries. Clinical specialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics showed 94% to 97% coverage, while mental health and primary care showed 63% to 74%. Self-harm, eating disorder, crisis and addiction queries stayed excluded (BrightEdge).
Length and intent matter too. WebFX found health searches of seven or more words triggered an AI Overview 73.9% of the time, against 35.8% for one or two word searches. Queries with a location, such as "dermatologist chattanooga," triggered them 35.8% of the time, against 54.2% with no brand or location (WebFX).
Provider-finding searches are the exception, though two BrightEdge studies from different dates give different figures. Its December 2025 three-year analysis shows "near me" and provider-finding healthcare searches at 0% AI Overview coverage (BrightEdge), while its January 2026 page, on 2,760 tracked keywords, shows 11% for queries like "doctor near me" in December 2025 (BrightEdge). Across all industries, Ahrefs found AI Overviews on just 7.9% of local searches (Ahrefs). So the AI Overview is where patients learn before they choose, and BrightEdge says Google leaves "near me" searches to Maps and the local pack. For the assistant side, see how to rank in ChatGPT.
What Google says it takes
Google is direct about this. "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be eligible as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google, AI features and your website). Google's newer guide adds that a site must also be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console (Google, optimizing for generative AI). Google lists the SEO basics that still apply:
- Crawling allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting setup.
- Content easy to find through internal links.
- A good page experience.
- Important content available as text.
- High-quality images and videos that support the text.
- Structured data that matches the visible text.
- An up-to-date Business Profile.
Health topics get a higher bar. Google says its systems "give even more weight to content that aligns with strong E-E-A-T for topics that could significantly impact the health, financial stability, or safety of people," and that of experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, "trust is most important" (Google, helpful content). For a practice, that means named clinician authors or reviewers, their credentials, clear sourcing and an About page that says who you are.
Google also asks for "non-commodity" content: first-hand expertise that goes beyond what everyone else has already written. And it lists what you can ignore for Google Search: llms.txt and other AI text files, "chunking" pages into tiny pieces, rewriting content just for AI, chasing inauthentic mentions, and overfocusing on structured data (Google).
Does a top ranking lead to a citation?
Often, but not reliably. In Ahrefs' study of one million keywords that triggered AI Overviews, the correlation between a top-10 ranking and being among the top three cited links was 0.347, and even pages ranking first appeared in the top three citations only about 50% of the time (Ahrefs).
Overlap studies agree on the direction, not the number. BrightEdge found about 24% of the sources cited in healthcare AI Overviews also rank in Google's organic top 10, the highest of nine industries, with 22.5% not in the top 100 at all (BrightEdge). Ahrefs' March 2026 update, across all topics and 863,000 keyword results, found 37.9% of cited URLs in the first 10 (Ahrefs).
Ranking still helps a citation last. Ahrefs found pages that ranked anywhere in Google for the same question were about seven times more likely to keep their AI Overview and AI Mode citations for at least a week, and closer title and description matches to the question went with slightly longer-lasting citations (Ahrefs).
The most cited sources show who wins health citations today. Conductor found Healthline.com held the largest AI Overview share of voice in health care at 5.76%, with clevelandclinic.org at 4.55% and mayoclinic.org at 4.13%, and news pages were the most cited page type (Conductor). A 2026 audit of 3,611 health questions found AI Overviews cited only 44.4% of the top five search results, leaning toward commercial health publishers (Agnoli et al., preprint). Across all topics, YouTube is the single most cited site in US AI Overviews, with 24.5% of citations among the top 50 sources in Ahrefs' November 2026 snapshot (Ahrefs).
Why a citation is worth the work
AI Overviews take clicks from the results below them. In browsing data on Google searches across all topics, Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits (Pew). Ahrefs found an AI Overview now correlates with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page (Ahrefs).
Being the cited source changes that math. Seer Interactive found that being cited in an AI Overview brings 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, though still 38% fewer than when no AI Overview appears (Seer Interactive). And patients trust the box: in rater8's 2026 survey, 37% chose the AI Overview as the part of Google's results they trust most when searching for care, against 20% for organic links, 13% for the map pack and 7% for ads (rater8).
| Finding | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Top-ranking page click-through rate when an AI Overview appears | 58% lower | Ahrefs |
| Organic clicks per impression when cited vs not cited | 120% more | Seer Interactive |
| Organic CTR on AI Overview queries, December 2025 vs February 2026 | Rose from 1.3% to 2.4% | Seer Interactive |
| Recent AI health users who used AI built into web search | 55% | West Health-Gallup |
A seven-step plan to rank in AI Overviews for healthcare
- Confirm every key page is eligible. Indexed, snippets allowed, crawling open in robots.txt and at your CDN. Check that no service page carries nosnippet or max-snippet by accident. Google's controls are summarized in our AI Overview tracker guide.
- Pick the questions that show AI Overviews. Longer, informational questions are the ones that trigger them most, like "what to expect at a first physical therapy visit" (WebFX). List the ones patients ask before they book with you.
- Answer in the first lines. Give a direct answer near the top, then the detail under clear headings, which Google says readers appreciate (Google).
- Show who stands behind the page. Name the clinician who wrote or reviewed it, with credentials and a review date, and cite your sources. Clinicians approve anything medical before it goes live.
- Add what only you can say. Your process, local details, photos and short clinician videos. That is the non-commodity content Google asks for, and video matters in a feature where YouTube is the most cited site.
- Rank the page in regular search too. Internal links, a title and meta description that match the question, and a fast page. In Ahrefs' data, ranking at all mattered more than exact position for keeping a citation.
- Check over several days. Ahrefs tracked five AI tools for 20 days and found 50% to 83% of citations were gone the next day (about 50% on AI Overviews), though about 75% of those came back within 20 days (Ahrefs).

Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.
In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.
It ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. See AI Visibility for the feature.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you rank in AI Overviews?
Make sure the page is indexed and eligible for a snippet, then make it the clearest, most trustworthy answer to the question, written or reviewed by a named clinician. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews beyond normal SEO, so strong pages that rank in regular search have the best odds.
How do I appear in AI Overviews for health searches?
Focus on the informational questions patients ask before they book, since those trigger AI Overviews most often, and give each one a sourced, clinician-reviewed answer (BrightEdge).
Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?
No. Google says you don't need new machine readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features, though structured data that matches your visible text still helps with rich results (Google).
Do I have to rank in the top 10 to be cited?
No, but it helps. BrightEdge found about 24% of healthcare AI Overview sources also rank in the top 10 (BrightEdge), and Ahrefs found 37.9% across all topics (Ahrefs).
Why don't AI Overviews show for "near me" searches?
Google shows few or no AI Overviews on healthcare "near me" searches in BrightEdge's data: 0% in one study (BrightEdge) and 11% in another with a different keyword set and date (BrightEdge). BrightEdge says Google leaves these searches to Maps and the local pack, so your Business Profile and listings do that work.
Does an AI Overview citation bring clicks?
Yes, compared with not being cited. Seer found cited pages earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited ones on the same results (Seer Interactive).
Is AI Visibility a Curve feature or a managed service?
Both. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO.
