An AEO strategy is a plan for making your brand the one AI assistants name, cite and recommend when patients ask about the care you offer: pick the questions that matter, measure how AI answers them today, make your site easy for assistants to read, publish clinician-approved pages that fill the gaps, and track the results through to bookings. Curve Compliance helps healthcare marketers build and run that plan. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. The managed service is Curve AEO, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

Why healthcare brands need an AEO strategy now
In rater8's April 2026 survey, 47% of patients said they had used an AI tool to research healthcare providers, up from 31% in 2025. Among patients who searched for a new doctor in the past year, 36% said AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude influenced their decision, ahead of Google search results (34%) and doctor referrals (32%) (rater8).
AI also sits inside Google. Conductor found AI Overviews on 48.7% of the page-one Google queries in its health care set, the highest of the 10 industries it studied (Conductor). BrightEdge, which measures the healthcare keywords it tracks, found AI Overviews on 89% of them (BrightEdge). Among recent AI health users, West Health-Gallup found 61% used general chatbots like ChatGPT or Copilot, and 55% used AI built into web search, such as Google's AI summaries (Gallup).
What it means for you: a plan built only around rankings misses many of the moments when patients choose care. The good news is that the work overlaps, because Google says its AI features "are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems" (Google).
The AEO strategy at a glance
| Step | What you do | The data behind it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Pick the questions | List what patients ask, by service line and area | 55% of patients searching for a new doctor start with some version of "specialty near me" | rater8 |
| 2. Measure your baseline | Record who each assistant names and cites | 50% to 83% of AI citations are gone the next day | Ahrefs |
| 3. Open the door to AI | Let search crawlers reach and read your pages | Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" | OpenAI |
| 4. Fix the facts | Match hours, addresses, insurance and services everywhere | 66% of patients who used AI to research providers had seen incorrect provider information | rater8 |
| 5. Publish what AI cites | Clinician-approved pages with sources and data | GEO study: citing sources, quotations and statistics lifted AI visibility 30% to 40% on the researchers' benchmark | Aggarwal et al. |
| 6. Be named by trusted sources | Earn real mentions where AI looks | 52.61% of AI citations for local healthcare questions pointed to third-party listings | Yext |
| 7. Track and tie to bookings | Follow visibility, AI visits and bookings | AI referrals were 0.64% of health care website traffic; ChatGPT drove 83.8% of them | Conductor |
Step 1: Pick the questions that bring patients
Start with questions, not keywords. Many are local: 55% of patients searching for a new doctor start with some version of "specialty near me" (rater8). Others research a condition or treatment first, and AI is waiting there: BrightEdge found AI Overviews on 100% of treatment queries, 98% of pain-related queries and 93% of symptom queries in its December 2025 healthcare data (BrightEdge).
- Finding care. "Best dermatologist near me" or "orthopedic surgeon in Denver who takes Aetna."
- Researching. A condition, a procedure, what to expect at a first visit. Accuracy matters most here.
- Comparing. "Which fertility clinics in Austin have the best reviews." This is where AI names your competitors.
Map each question to the page that should answer it. Keep the long versions: WebFX found health searches of seven or more words triggered an AI Overview 73.9% of the time, versus 35.8% for one or two word searches (WebFX).
Step 2: Measure where you stand
Record a baseline for each question: whether each assistant names you, whether it cites your site, and which brands it names instead. Those readings are usually called mention rate, citation rate and share of voice.
Check more than once. In Ahrefs' 20-day test of five AI tools, 50% to 83% of citations were gone the next day, though about 75% of those came back within 20 days (Ahrefs).
Your Google rankings will not give you the answer either. In Ahrefs' study of 15,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, only 12% of cited links ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt on average; Perplexity was highest at 28.6%, and the others hovered around 8% (Ahrefs). Even inside Google, a March 2026 Ahrefs study found 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 results (Ahrefs).
Step 3: Make your site easy for AI assistants to read
Google says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode." To be eligible as a supporting link, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google).
Other assistants run their own search crawlers. OpenAI says "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links" (OpenAI). Perplexity says PerplexityBot "is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity), and Anthropic says disabling Claude-SearchBot "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results" (Anthropic).
Search crawlers are separate from training crawlers: OpenAI lets a site allow OAI-SearchBot for search while disallowing GPTBot for training (OpenAI). Check robots.txt and any firewall or CDN rules, keep key content in text, and see which AI crawlers to allow and how to optimize a healthcare website for AI search.
Step 4: Get your facts right everywhere AI looks
Among patients who used AI to research providers, 66% said they had encountered incorrect provider information from an AI tool, and 60% said they trusted the summary they got without verifying it. rater8 lists the errors: "Wrong addresses, phone numbers, insurance details, or office hours." (rater8)
AI also cites other sites for those facts. For local healthcare questions, Yext found 52.61% of AI citations pointed to third-party listings such as directories and insurance platforms, the heaviest listing reliance of any industry it studied (Yext). Make your details match on your site and the listings patients use, then ask each assistant about you. See fixing what AI gets wrong about your practice.
Step 5: Build a content roadmap your clinicians can approve
Google puts content first: "Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide" (Google).
In the GEO study presented at KDD, adding citations, quotations and statistics to a page improved its visibility in AI-generated answers by 30% to 40% on the researchers' benchmark, and by up to 37% in a test on Perplexity, while keyword stuffing gave little to no improvement (Aggarwal et al.). Ahrefs found the pages AI assistants cite are 25.7% fresher on average than the pages in Google's organic results (Ahrefs).
Turn the gaps from Step 2 into a ranked list of pages. Answer the question in the first lines, then add detail, sources and your clinicians' experience. Size the list to what your clinicians can review, and skip thin variations: Google warns that separate pages for every way people search, made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers, break its spam policies (Google). See a roadmap clinicians can keep up with and AEO content for healthcare.
Step 6: Be named by the sources AI already trusts
In Conductor's data, mayoclinic.org (6.58%) and clevelandclinic.org (4.90%) earned the largest shares of AI citations in health care equipment and services (Conductor). Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility (about 0.737) of any factor it tested (Ahrefs), a correlation rather than a cause.
Google cautions that "seeking inauthentic "mentions" across the web isn't as helpful as it might seem" (Google). Give others something worth citing instead: original data, clinician interviews and clear explainer videos. See where AI gets healthcare answers.
Step 7: Track progress and tie it to bookings
AI referrals made up 0.64% of all website traffic for the health care industry in Conductor's benchmarks, and ChatGPT drove 83.8% of that AI referral traffic (Conductor). Clicks undercount influence: Pew found that, across all topics, Google users who saw an AI summary clicked a link inside it on just 1% of visits (Pew Research Center), yet 58% of adults who used AI for physical health advice in the past year later followed up with a doctor or health care provider (KFF).
So track three layers together: how often AI answers name and cite you, visits from AI assistants, and the bookings those visits bring. Review them monthly and measure each new page against its questions. See AEO tracking for healthcare and AI search traffic to bookings.
AEO best practices for healthcare brands
- Answer first. Put the direct answer in the opening lines, then the detail.
- Write from experience. Use your clinicians' knowledge and your own data.
- Cite your sources. Link the studies behind medical statements and include the numbers.
- Keep facts consistent. Same name, hours, addresses, phone numbers and insurance everywhere.
- Skip the hacks. Google says you don't need AI text files, special markup or chunked content for its AI features (Google).
- Measure over time. Judge progress on repeated checks and on bookings, not a single answer.
What This Looks Like in Practice
In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, Curve's team tracked the questions buyers ask AI assistants, found where competitors were named and the brand wasn't, and published pages to close those gaps. About five weeks in:
- AI assistants named or cited the brand in 53% of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions (104 of 196), across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude.
- Across 184 real buyer questions and 912 AI answers, its site was cited in 236 answers, more than any competitor's and more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one (89).
- 47 of the new pages were already cited by AI assistants within six days of going live.
- One new page brought in more than half of the brand's unpaid ChatGPT visits in its first week.
How Curve Compliance helps
AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.
What You Get with Curve AEO:
- AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
- Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
- Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
- Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.
With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.
AI Visibility keeps the plan measurable. It ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. It turns what it finds into a weekly roadmap sized to what your clinicians can publish, with medical topics flagged for clinical review. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an AEO strategy?
An AEO strategy is a plan for making your brand the one AI assistants name, cite and recommend for the questions your patients ask. It covers which questions to target, how AI answers them today, the site and content work that closes the gaps, and how you track results through to bookings.
What are AEO best practices for healthcare?
Answer early on the page, write from your clinicians' experience, cite sources, keep your facts consistent, allow AI search crawlers, and have a clinician approve medical content.
How is an AEO strategy different from an SEO strategy?
SEO aims for ranked pages and clicks; AEO aims to be named and cited inside the answer. Google says optimizing for its generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google). See AEO vs SEO for healthcare.
Which AI assistants should a healthcare AEO strategy cover?
Start with ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, then Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot. ChatGPT drove 83.8% of AI referral traffic to health care websites in Conductor's data (Conductor).
Do I need llms.txt or schema markup for AEO?
Not for Google. Google says there's "no special schema.org markup you need to add" for generative AI search, and that an llms.txt file "will neither harm nor help" your visibility in Google Search (Google).
How do you know if an AEO strategy is working?
Track how often AI answers name and cite you, your share of voice against competitors, visits from AI assistants, and the bookings those visits bring, over repeated checks rather than one.
Can Curve help with our AEO strategy?
Yes. Curve AEO is Curve's managed service: Curve's team builds your strategy, creates and optimizes content, and tracks progress. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.
