AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making your brand the one that AI answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude, name, cite and recommend when people ask a question. In healthcare marketing, it means being the practice, clinic or health brand an AI assistant recommends when a patient asks "who is the best pediatric dentist near me" or "which telehealth services treat acne," and making sure what it says about you is right. Curve Compliance helps healthcare brands with this. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. Curve AEO is the managed service, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

What AEO means

AEO stands for answer engine optimization. An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Classic SEO works to rank a page on a results page; AEO works to get your brand into the answer itself, ideally named, described accurately and linked as a source.

Google uses the same terms. Its guide for site owners says AEO and GEO (generative engine optimization) "are both terms you may see used to describe work specifically focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences" (Google). Outside marketing, AEO has other meanings, such as the EU's customs program for trusted traders (European Commission). In search and healthcare marketing, it means answer engine optimization.

The answer engines patients use

Answer engines now reach billions of people, and many of them bring health questions.

These are company figures, global and not independently audited, but the direction is clear. OpenAI also said in January 2026 that "More than 40 million turn to ChatGPT every day with healthcare questions" (OpenAI).

Why AEO matters in healthcare marketing

Patients bring health questions to AI, and some of those questions are about where to get care. KFF found 32% of U.S. adults used AI for health information and advice in the past year, similar to social media (29%) but well behind doctors (80%) and internet search engines (68%) (KFF). Pew found 34% of U.S. adults use AI chatbots for at least one of eight health or medical reasons (Pew Research Center).

Choosing a provider is part of it. In rater8's April 2026 survey, 47% of patients said they had used an AI tool to research healthcare providers, up from 31% in 2025 (rater8). See how patients use ChatGPT to find a doctor for more on that journey.

What it means for you: when a patient asks an assistant for a recommendation, the answer names a few brands. AEO is how you work to be one of them.

How answer engines decide what to say

Most answer engines combine what the model already knows with a live web search. Google describes its approach as retrieval-augmented generation, "also known as grounding", which relies "on our core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages from our Search index." It also uses query fan-out: "A set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model to request more information" (Google). Google says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems determine they add to classic Search, "and as such, often don't trigger" (Google).

ChatGPT does not always search. Semrush found ChatGPT enabled web search on 34.5% of queries as of February 2026, "meaning most responses still rely on training data alone" (Semrush). So AEO works on two fronts: being present and accurate across the web the models learn from, and being the page live search finds and cites.

Which pages get cited is its own question. Ahrefs compared the links four AI assistants cited for 15,000 prompts with Google's results and found that, on average, only 12% ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt (Ahrefs). In health care, Conductor found mayoclinic.org (6.58%) and clevelandclinic.org (4.90%) earned the largest shares of AI citations in health care equipment and services (Conductor). For more, see where AI gets healthcare answers and query fan-out in healthcare.

Content choices matter too. In the GEO study presented at KDD, the best methods, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics, improved a page's visibility in AI-generated answers by 30% to 40% on the researchers' benchmark, and by up to 37% in a test on Perplexity, while keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement (Aggarwal et al.).

What AEO work involves

An AEO program for a healthcare brand usually covers six things:

  1. The questions. The questions patients ask at each stage, by service line and area.
  2. The answers today. How each assistant answers them, who it names and which sources it cites.
  3. Technical access. Pages that search crawlers can reach, index and read as text.
  4. Content. Clinician-approved pages that answer those questions directly, with sources and data.
  5. Facts. Correct hours, addresses, insurance and services on your site and the listings AI reads.
  6. Results. Visibility over time, visits from AI assistants, and the bookings they bring.

Our AEO strategy guide turns these into a step-by-step plan, and AEO tracking covers the measurement.

AEO, SEO and GEO

AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says that from its side, "optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO" (Google). The difference is the goal: SEO aims for a ranked page and a click, AEO aims to be the brand inside the answer. GEO is a close cousin focused on generative AI answers. See AEO vs SEO for healthcare and AEO vs GEO vs SEO.

Why AEO is different in healthcare

Health answers carry more weight, and patients know AI can be wrong. Among recent AI health users, only 4% strongly trust the accuracy of AI-generated health information, according to West Health-Gallup (Gallup). KFF found 44% of U.S. adults are not too or not at all confident they can tell whether health information from AI chatbots is true or false (KFF).

Yet many act on what they read. Of the patients in rater8's survey who had used AI to research providers, 66% said they had seen wrong provider details from an AI tool, and 60% said they trusted the summary they got without checking it (rater8).

That shapes AEO in three ways. Accuracy comes first, so wrong hours or insurance get fixed before anything else. Medical content needs a clinician to approve it before it goes live. And measurement has to keep patient information out of the questions you track and the tools you use. See what to do when AI is wrong about your practice.

What This Looks Like in Practice

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, Curve's team tracked the questions buyers ask AI assistants, found where competitors were named and the brand wasn't, and published pages to close those gaps. About five weeks in:

  • AI assistants named or cited the brand in 53% of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions (104 of 196), across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity and Claude.
  • Across 184 real buyer questions and 912 AI answers, its site was cited in 236 answers, more than any competitor's and more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one (89).
  • 47 of the new pages were already cited by AI assistants within six days of going live.
  • One new page brought in more than half of the brand's unpaid ChatGPT visits in its first week.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

What You Get with Curve AEO:

  • AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
  • Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
  • Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
  • Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress. It's available to practices and clinics, health systems and multi-location groups, and agencies. Agencies can use AI Visibility for their clients, or have Curve's team run it for them.

AI Visibility shows how often AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, name and cite your practice for the questions your patients ask. It catches what AI gets wrong about your practice, so you can correct it on the pages AI reads. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.

Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making your brand the one AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity name, cite and recommend when people ask a question. In healthcare, it also means making sure what those answers say about your practice is accurate.

What does AEO stand for?

In marketing, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is sometimes used alongside GEO, generative engine optimization, which Google describes as a closely related term.

What is answer engine optimization in marketing?

It is the part of search marketing aimed at AI answers rather than ranked links: knowing the questions your customers ask, seeing how AI answers them, and improving your site and content so AI names and cites you.

Why does AEO matter for healthcare brands?

Because patients ask AI where to get care. In rater8's April 2026 survey, 47% of patients said they had used an AI tool to research healthcare providers (rater8).

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, but they overlap. SEO aims for ranked pages and clicks; AEO aims to be named and cited inside the answer, and most AEO work starts from good SEO.

What is AIO SEO?

AIO is common shorthand for Google's AI Overviews in search marketing research, including Conductor's healthcare benchmarks (Conductor). Used that way, AIO SEO means working to appear in AI Overviews. That is part of AEO, and Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond SEO best practices (Google).

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They are close. Google groups them together as terms for work "focused on improving visibility in AI search experiences" (Google).

Can Curve do AEO for us?

Yes. Curve AEO is Curve's managed service: Curve's team builds your strategy, creates and optimizes content, and tracks progress. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started.
