A healthcare marketing strategy for the AI search era plans for three channels at once: paid ads that create demand, a website and analytics that turn visits into booked appointments, and AI search, where patients now ask which provider to choose before they click anything. The shift is already in the data: in rater8's 2026 survey, 36% of patients who searched for a new doctor said AI tools influenced their choice, ahead of Google search results at 34% (rater8). Curve Compliance is built for that whole funnel. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. Curve AEO is the managed service, where Curve's team handles your AEO strategy and execution.

The patient funnel now has three channels
Most healthcare marketing plans still treat search, ads and the website as the whole funnel. Patients have added a step: they ask an AI assistant, read the answer, and often decide who to call from it. A strategy that works in 2026 gives each channel a clear job and measures all three to the same outcome, a booked appointment.
| Channel | Its job in the funnel | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Paid ads (search, social, display) | Create demand and reach patients who are ready to book now | Booked appointments by campaign, not clicks |
| Website and analytics | Turn every visit into a call, form or booking, and show what worked | Conversion rate by landing page and source |
| AI search (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) | Get your brand named and your pages cited when patients ask which provider to choose | How often AI answers name and cite you, and the visits and bookings they bring |
| Reviews and listings | Supply the facts and reputation every other channel draws on | Rating, review volume and consistent details across listings |
How patients choose a provider now
rater8 asked patients which sources most influenced their choice of a new doctor. Respondents could pick up to three, and AI tools now sit in the middle of the pack, next to Google and doctor referrals (rater8).
| Source that most influenced the choice of a new doctor | Share of searchers | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Friends and family | 43% | rater8 |
| Insurance website | 43% | rater8 |
| Review sites | 40% | rater8 |
| AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) | 36% | rater8 |
| Google search results | 34% | rater8 |
| Doctor referral | 32% | rater8 |
The demand is there: over the past year, 72% of patients were in the market for a new provider, and 55% of those searching start with some version of "specialty near me." When they search Google, 37% trust the AI Overview most, versus 20% for the organic blue links, 13% for the local map pack and 7% for sponsored ads (rater8). No single channel carries the decision, which is the case for a plan that covers all of them. For the full survey picture, see patients using AI to research providers.
Search still drives the visits, but answers take the clicks
Organic search still carries a large share of healthcare website traffic. In Conductor's 2026 benchmarks, organic Google traffic makes up 42.36% of traffic for the health care industry, while AI referrals account for 0.64%. Of that AI referral traffic, ChatGPT drives 83.8% (Conductor). SEO stays in the plan.
But fewer searches end in a click. In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click (SparkToro). In Pew's browsing data on U.S. adults' Google searches across all topics, users who saw an AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when there was none (Pew Research Center). Being cited inside the answer helps: Seer found a citation in an AI Overview brings 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, though still 38% fewer than when no AI Overview appears (Seer Interactive).
Meanwhile the AI channel keeps growing from a small base. In Semrush's U.S. clickstream data, outbound referral traffic from ChatGPT to the rest of the web grew 206% in 2025 (Semrush). For more on clicks, see zero-click searches in healthcare.
Plan for AI answers as their own channel
Healthcare is one of the topics where Google shows AI answers most often. Three studies measured it three ways, so quote each with its method:
| Study | Method | Healthcare AI Overview rate | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conductor | Page-one U.S. Google queries in its health care set, Sept. to Oct. 2025 (from about 21.9 million searches across all 10 industries it studied) | 48.7% of health care queries, the highest of 10 industries | Conductor |
| BrightEdge | Its tracked healthcare keyword set, December 2025 | 89% (59% two years earlier) | BrightEdge |
| WebFX | 130,070 U.S. health queries, July 2025 | 51% | WebFX |
Ranking and being cited are related, but they are not the same thing. In healthcare, about 24% of the sources cited in AI Overviews also rank in Google's top 10, the highest overlap of the industries BrightEdge tracked (BrightEdge). In Ahrefs' study of 15,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, only 12% of cited links ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt on average; Perplexity was highest at 28.6%, and the others hovered around 8% (Ahrefs). So AI search needs its own line in the plan, often called AEO (answer engine optimization). See AEO strategy for healthcare.
The work itself is familiar. Google says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and that a supporting page "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central). It adds that "Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website's presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide" (Google). For a healthcare brand, that means plain answers to the questions patients ask, written or reviewed by your clinicians.
Reviews and listings feed every channel
Patients filter on reputation before they book. 75% said the lowest star rating they would accept before booking is 4.0 or higher, and 44% said they wouldn't book below 4.5 stars. 55% have canceled or avoided booking with a provider because of negative online reviews, and 66% say seeing a provider respond to reviews influences their trust, up from 42% in 2025 (rater8).
AI leans on the same sources. For local healthcare questions, Yext found listings such as medical directories and insurance platforms accounted for 52.61% of AI citations, the heaviest reliance on third-party listings of any industry it studied (Yext). Keep your name, locations, hours, insurance and services the same on your site and every listing. See where AI gets healthcare answers.
Paid ads: create demand you can measure
Paid ads remain the most direct way to reach patients who are ready to book now. Two rules keep ad spend honest in healthcare:
- Optimize to booked appointments. Send ad platforms the conversions that matter, a booked or completed appointment, so their bidding learns from booked appointments, not from clicks. See booked appointment attribution.
- Keep patient details out of ad platforms. What a visitor does on a health site can be health information, so measurement has to be set up for healthcare from the start. See conversion tracking for healthcare.
Measure every channel to the booking
Industry studies disagree on whether AI visitors convert better, which is why your own numbers matter most. Adobe found AI-referred visits to U.S. retail sites converted 90% better than non-AI traffic in September 2026 (Adobe). Amsive's study of 54 websites found LLM referrals converted at 4.87% and organic search at 4.60%, a difference that was not statistically significant (Amsive). Neither is a healthcare benchmark.
| Channel | Leading signal | Outcome to report |
|---|---|---|
| Paid ads | Click-through and conversion rate | Booked appointments by campaign |
| Organic search | Rankings and clicks on patient questions | Bookings from organic visits |
| AI search | How often AI answers name and cite you | Visits and bookings from AI answers |
| Reviews and listings | Rating and review volume | Calls and bookings from listings |
Report all four on one page each month, next to each other. When one channel rises and bookings stay flat, the landing page or the question is wrong, not the channel. See how to tie AI search traffic to bookings.
A healthcare marketing plan in seven steps
- List the patient questions that lead to a booking. Use patients' words: "best pediatric dentist near me," "does this clinic take my insurance," "which telehealth service treats this."
- Check how search and AI answer them today. Note who is named, which pages are cited and what is wrong.
- Fix the facts. Services, locations, hours and insurance, stated plainly on your site and matched on every listing.
- Build the pages patients need. One clear page per question that matters, reviewed by your clinicians.
- Point paid ads at booked appointments. Measure campaigns by patients, not clicks.
- Track every channel to the booking. Ads, organic, AI and listings, side by side.
- Review monthly and adjust. Move effort to the questions and channels that book.
How Curve Compliance helps
Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO.
What You Get with Curve AEO:
- AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
- Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
- Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
- Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.
With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.
AI Visibility ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. It is built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan. See AI Visibility in Curve.
In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthcare marketing strategy?
A healthcare marketing strategy is the plan for how a practice or healthcare brand reaches patients, earns their trust and turns them into booked appointments across paid ads, search, AI answers, reviews and its own website. In the AI search era, it also covers how AI assistants describe and recommend you.
What is a patient acquisition strategy?
It is the part of the marketing strategy focused on new patients: the questions they ask, the channels where they find you, and the steps from first search to booked appointment. Measure it by booked patients, not clicks.
How is AI search changing healthcare marketing?
Patients now ask AI which provider to choose. In rater8's 2026 survey, 36% of patients who searched for a new doctor said AI tools influenced their choice (rater8), so being named in AI answers is now part of the plan.
Should healthcare marketers still invest in SEO?
Yes. Organic Google traffic makes up 42.36% of traffic for the health care industry in Conductor's benchmarks (Conductor), and a page must be indexed in Google Search to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google).
How do you measure a healthcare marketing strategy?
Track every channel to the same outcome, a booked appointment, and report paid, organic, AI and listings side by side each month.
What healthcare marketing strategies work best in 2026?
Plain answers to patient questions, consistent facts across your site and listings, strong reviews, paid ads optimized to booked appointments, and measurement that covers AI search as well as Google.
Where does AEO fit in a healthcare marketing plan?
AEO is the AI search line of the plan: tracking how AI answers name you, improving the pages they read, and closing gaps where competitors are named. With Curve AEO, Curve's team handles that work for you. See what AI visibility is.
