Physical therapy marketing is how a clinic reaches people looking for a physical therapist, whether a doctor sent them or they are deciding on their own, and more of those people now check an AI assistant before they call. Curve Compliance helps physical therapy clinics see what ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini tell them. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. Curve AEO is the managed service: Curve's team turns what AI says about your clinic into a plan, writes the pages and makes the site fixes, and you see progress over time.

How patients find a physical therapist now
Many PT patients start with a doctor, and then they look things up. Among people who used AI for health information or advice in the past 30 days, West Health-Gallup found 59% use it to research on their own before visiting a doctor and 56% to research after a visit (West Health-Gallup). That makes "your doctor says you need physical therapy" a natural moment to open ChatGPT and ask which clinic to choose.
The habit is growing fast. KFF found 29% of US adults now use AI tools or chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude for health information and advice at least monthly, up from 17% two years earlier (KFF, June 2026). And it often leads to care rather than replacing it: 58% of adults who used AI for physical health advice in the past year later followed up with a doctor or health care provider (KFF, March 2026).
The topics PT clinics care about are heavily covered by AI. In BrightEdge's December 2025 healthcare data, 94% of the orthopedics content it tracks had AI Overviews (BrightEdge). Questions about knees, shoulders, backs and recovery after surgery often get an AI answer first. For the surgical side of the same patient journey, see orthopedic marketing in AI search.
Direct access changes the questions patients ask
Patients do not always need a referral. According to APTA, all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands provide some form of direct access to physical therapist services, but the specific provisions and limitations differ by jurisdiction (APTA).
So "do I need a referral?" has a different answer from state to state, and a patient's plan can add its own rules. Every patient unsure about referrals is a question an AI assistant will try to answer, and it needs your state's rules and your payers' rules to get it right.
| Patient question | What the patient is deciding | What your site needs |
|---|---|---|
| do I need a referral to see a physical therapist in [state] | Whether to call you directly | A direct-access page for your state, checked against the practice act and your main payers |
| physical therapy after knee replacement near me | Where to go after surgery | A post-surgery rehab page your PTs write, with each clinic's address and hours |
| sports physical therapist for runners in [city] | Whether you fit their sport | Therapist bios that list specialty certifications and the patients each PT sees most |
| pelvic floor physical therapist near me | Whether you offer a private, specialized service | A plain service page that names who provides it and how to book |
| physical therapy or chiropractor for back pain | Which kind of provider to see | A page your PTs write on how you work and when you refer to other providers |
| does my insurance cover physical therapy at [clinic] | Whether they can afford to start | An insurance page: plans in network and how you check benefits before the first visit |
The comparison row overlaps with chiropractic, so if you share patients with local chiropractors, see chiropractic marketing in AI search. Whatever the question, a physical therapist on your team should write or approve anything clinical.
Video, exercise content and what AI cites
Physical therapy is taught with movement, and AI answers lean on video. YouTube is the most cited site in Google AI Overviews in the US, with 24.5% of citations among the 50 most-cited sites in Ahrefs' November 2026 snapshot of over 3 million queries across all topics (Ahrefs). In a separate study of 75,000 brands, YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI visibility of any factor Ahrefs tested across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, at about 0.737 (Ahrefs). That is a correlation, not proof of cause, but it points the same way.
Google's basics for AI features include "Supporting your textual content with high-quality images and videos, when applicable" (Google Search Central). For a PT clinic that can mean a short "what to expect at your first visit" video, a tour of the gym, or a therapist explaining how sessions work. Put a transcript on the page, keep exercise content general and clinician-approved, and show patients on camera only with their written authorization.
Ranking still helps on Google. Ahrefs found 37.9% of URLs cited in Google AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 results for the same query, in a March 2026 study of 863,000 keyword results (Ahrefs). So good local SEO still counts, but the pages AI Overviews cite are not limited to the first page of results.
The clinic facts AI gets wrong
For PT, the errors that hurt most are practical ones. In rater8's 2026 survey, 66% of the 465 patients who had used AI to research providers said they had encountered incorrect provider information from an AI tool: wrong addresses, phone numbers, insurance details or office hours (rater8, 2026 Patient Choice Report). A patient told you are out of network, or closed before work hours, books somewhere else.
Multi-clinic groups have this problem at every address. Give each clinic its own page with its hours, therapists, services and parking, and keep those facts the same on your Google Business Profile and every directory. For content planning around your therapists' time, see an AI visibility roadmap your clinicians can keep up with.
A physical therapy AEO checklist
- A direct-access page for each state you practice in. Say plainly whether patients can book without a referral, and note where a payer still asks for one. Review it when rules change.
- An insurance page. Plans in network, how you verify benefits, and what a patient should bring.
- Condition and post-surgery pages your PTs write. Describe what you do and who you see, with no outcome promises.
- Therapist bios with credentials. Specialty certifications, training and the kinds of patients each therapist sees most.
- A page for referring providers. How a physician's office sends a referral and what your clinic sends back.
- Clinic pages with the same facts everywhere. Address, hours, parking and accessibility for each clinic, matching your listings.
- Video with text. A transcript or written summary beside every video so AI can read it.
- Pages AI search can reach. Google lists "Ensuring that crawling is allowed in robots.txt, and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" among its basics (Google).
For writing pages AI assistants can use, see AEO content for healthcare.
How Curve Compliance helps
AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. It reports mention rate (how often AI answers name you), citation rate (how often they cite your site) and share of voice (your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with).
What You Get with Curve AEO:
- AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
- Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
- Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
- Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.
Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress. With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report.
It ties AI answers to the visits and bookings they bring you. It catches what AI gets wrong about your practice, so you can correct it on the pages AI reads. For a PT clinic, that includes your referral rules, insurance and hours. See AI search traffic to bookings.
It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.
Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started. See AI Visibility, Curve AEO and Curve for orthopedic and musculoskeletal care.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is physical therapy marketing in AI search?
It is local PT marketing built for AI answers: clear clinic facts, referral rules and therapist pages that ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini can find and repeat when people ask for a physical therapist. It covers referred patients and patients booking on their own under direct access.
Do patients need a referral to see a physical therapist?
Every state allows some form of direct access, but the provisions and limits differ by state (APTA), and some insurance plans still ask for a referral. Your site should say what applies at your clinic.
Do patients use AI after a doctor recommends physical therapy?
West Health-Gallup found 56% of people who used AI for health in the past 30 days used it to research after visiting a doctor (West Health-Gallup). That covers every kind of doctor visit, not only a referral to physical therapy.
Should a PT clinic make videos for AI search?
Video helps when it supports a page with text. Add transcripts, keep exercise content general and clinician-approved, and film patients only with written authorization.
Can PT pages promise recovery results?
Leave recovery promises out. Describe the conditions you see, how sessions work and who provides them, and have a physical therapist on your team write or approve anything clinical.
How do multi-clinic PT groups show up in AI answers?
Give each clinic its own page with its hours, therapists and services, and keep those facts the same in every listing so AI can answer for each address.
What does Curve's team do in Curve AEO?
With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. If your developer manages your site, Curve's team hands them the exact fixes.
Does Curve AEO send patient data to AI assistants?
No. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
