Meta Ads Data Advisor on a Healthcare Website: What to Know

Meta Pixel Helper is now Meta Ads Data Advisor, and it can set up pixels, CRM links and automatic events for you. Here is what to check on a clinic site.

10 min read

Meta Ads Data Advisor is the new name for the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension, and it can now set up the Meta Pixel, the Conversions API, CRM connections and automatic standard events from your browser (Meta), so on a healthcare website, review every automated change before you approve it. Meta lists health and wellness among the data source categories that can face data sharing restrictions (Meta), and HHS says tracking vendors that handle PHI for a covered entity are business associates (HHS). Curve Compliance sends your conversions to Meta server-side instead, strips PHI before data reaches an ad platform and signs a BAA on every plan.

Book a call. Before you let any tool add events to a clinic site, see what the site already sends. Curve Compliance's team reviews what your website sends to Meta, Google and TikTok with you, then replaces browser ad pixels with server-side conversions. Setup is done for you, typically live in about a week. Book a call with Curve.

What changed from Pixel Helper

Meta's developer page names it “Meta Ads Data Advisor (formerly Meta Pixel Helper),” a browser extension for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge that “helps you automatically connect your website and other data to Meta, monitor your setup for issues, and fix them with your approval.” If you had Pixel Helper, “the extension automatically updates to Meta Ads Data Advisor. All existing diagnostic features continue to work.” What's new is automation. Meta says Data Advisor can now “Configure Meta Pixel, Conversions API, customer relationship management (CRM) integrations, and product catalogs from your browser without writing code,” and “Run end-to-end automation flows” that pause “only for your consent or required input” (Meta).

The permissions are broad. Two of the three permissions Meta lists are “Read and change all your data on all websites: Allows Meta to operate on third-party sites on your behalf” and “Access the page debugger backend: Allows AI to view the current page content and navigate websites reliably” (Meta). The extension's own terms say “Meta will receive information about your browsing activity and use this information solely to provide and improve Meta Ads Data Advisor,” that “Meta will have systems and measures in place designed to remove or obfuscate sensitive data,” and that “Recommendations use artificial intelligence to generate outputs that may contain errors, inaccuracies, or omissions” (Meta).

What Data Advisor can set up for you

Each capability is in Meta's words. The third column is the question to answer before you approve it on a clinic site.

CapabilityMeta's wordsQuestion to ask on a clinic siteSource
Pixel and Conversions API through Google Tag Manager (Directory entry)“Set up Meta Pixel and Conversions API together through Google Tag Manager, including standard event configuration.”Which pages will the tag fire on, and which standard events will it add to booking and intake pages?Meta
CRM connection (Salesforce, HubSpot)“Integrate Salesforce or HubSpot CRM data with Meta for improved targeting and measurement.”Does the CRM hold patient leads or appointment details, and which fields would reach Meta?Meta
Advanced Matching“Configure Advanced Matching for improved conversion matching.” Meta defines it as a feature that “sends hashed customer information (for example, email) alongside Pixel events”Which forms would supply that customer information, and is any of them an intake or booking form?Meta
Store connection (Shopify entry)“Connect a Shopify store or WooCommerce website to Meta (Pixel, Conversions API, catalog, and data sharing).”Do product names or catalog entries describe a condition or a treatment?Meta
Fixes“Recommend and apply fixes from your browser with your approval.”Who approves, and do they check what the fix will send before they click?Meta
Audit trail“Every automated action produces a summary report with screenshots of what was done.”What will those screenshots show if the job runs inside a CRM that holds patient records?Meta

Data Advisor's diagnostic side is still useful. Meta says “basic Pixel detection and troubleshooting work while you are logged out,” and the side panel shows event detail “including content IDs, content types, Pixel URL location, and Advanced Matching data” (Meta). Read that panel on your booking and thank-you pages: it shows what the pixel is already sending.

Automatic events: pre-selected since August 3, 2026

Meta says “Starting August 3, 2026, when you set up a new Pixel through Data Advisor, the option to automatically detect and add standard events is pre-selected during the setup flow.” It adds “If you proceed with it enabled, Meta identifies and suggests standard events from your website based on activity,” and that missing conversion events “such as Purchase, Lead, or AddToCart” may be suggested: “By default, these suggestions are applied automatically, but you can turn them off during setup or in Events Manager at any time” (Meta).

Two switches control it. During setup, deselect the option before you finish. Afterward, Meta says you can “review detected events, manage individual events, or turn this feature off at any time in Events Manager under Settings > Track events automatically without code.” Events added this way show the status “Auto-detected: This event was automatically detected based on your website activity, without additional code” (Meta). Separately, the pixel's Automatic Configuration means “The Meta Pixel will send button click and page metadata (such as data structured according to Opengraph or Schema.org formats) from your website,” unless the base code sets autoConfig to false (Meta). On a clinic site, button labels and page titles often name a service or a condition.

Why health sites get different rules from Meta

Meta assigns websites and apps to data source categories. Its health and wellness category covers a source that “Is associated with medical conditions or specific health statuses, provider/patient relationships, services for accessing personal health information, or health-related products and services (examples include, a patient portal, wellness tracker, telemedicine platform, pharmacy, health insurance marketplace, or condition-specific support group).” Meta can assign the category itself, and “you will not be able to modify a Meta-assigned categorization for your data source” (Meta).

A restricted category can bring three levels of restriction. Core Setup “Restricts the sharing of custom parameters and parts of URLs following the domain.” A “Restriction on certain standard events: Restricts the sharing of specific mid and lower funnel events.” Full restrictions “Fully restrict the sharing of all events in specific regions or all regions” (Meta). Under core setup, “Automatic advanced matching may be unavailable” (Meta). Meta also lets you self-assign a category in Events Manager (Meta). If Meta has already flagged your dataset, see Meta data source category review and restricted standard events.

Behind the categories are Meta's Business Tools Terms. Advertisers agree not to share data that “includes or is based on, directly or otherwise, health information,” and “The names you choose and criteria you establish for your events, conversions, and any custom audiences you create must not reflect, imply or be based on any category of information described in this Section 1.h.” (Meta; Directory entry). For the full section, see what Meta's Business Tools Terms say about health data.

What HHS says about tracking vendors

HHS's tracking bulletin says “tracking technology vendors are business associates if they create, receive, maintain, or transmit PHI on behalf of a regulated entity.” It also says “If a regulated entity does not want to create a business associate relationship with a vendor that meets the definition of business associate, it cannot disclose PHI to such a vendor without individuals' authorizations,” and that cookie banners “do not constitute a valid HIPAA authorization.” A federal court vacated part of the bulletin on June 20, 2024 (HHS), so talk to your counsel about how it applies to your site. A safer order of operations

  1. See what the page sends first. Run Curve's free website scan on your home, service, booking and thank-you pages, and use Data Advisor's diagnostic panel logged out. For a step-by-step check, see how to see which trackers your website loads.
  2. Check your category. In Events Manager, look at the categories on your dataset and data sources, and whether Meta assigned them (Meta).
  3. Deselect automatic events. Turn off the pre-selected option during setup, then confirm Settings > Track events automatically without code in Events Manager (Meta).
  4. Decide what a CRM may send before connecting it. Write down which fields could reach Meta, and leave out anything that names a condition, a treatment or an appointment type.
  5. Keep the extension away from patient systems. Install it in a browser profile your team does not use for an EHR, a patient portal or a CRM with patient records, since its permissions cover all websites.
  6. Move conversions server-side. Send conversions from a server with neutral event names and a fixed list of fields. See HIPAA-compliant Meta Pixel alternatives for the options, and how to remove the Meta pixel from a healthcare website when you are ready to take it off.

How Curve Compliance helps

Curve Compliance gives a healthcare site a Meta signal that doesn't depend on a browser extension's suggestions. Curve replaces the Meta Pixel and your other browser ad pixels with one script and sends conversions server-side from its own servers to the Meta Conversions API, Google Ads, TikTok, Microsoft Advertising and LinkedIn.

  • Neutral events, fixed fields. Each platform receives only a fixed list of fields, and events can use neutral names.
  • PHI checks. Curve checks every event for PHI-like patterns, such as condition names, form answers and emails in URLs, and strips PHI before data reaches an ad platform.
  • Contact identifiers off by default. They are off by default on Meta, Google Ads and TikTok.
  • Proof of what was sent. Event Logs show what Curve sent to Meta and what Meta accepted.

Curve is SOC 2 Type II, signs a BAA on every plan (Directory entry), and Curve's team does the setup, typically live in about a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Meta Ads Data Advisor?

Meta Ads Data Advisor is Meta's browser extension for Chrome and Edge, formerly Meta Pixel Helper, that checks Pixel events and can now set up the Pixel, the Conversions API, CRM connections and automatic events with your approval (Meta). On a healthcare website, review each automated change before you approve it.

Is Meta Ads Data Advisor the same as Meta Pixel Helper?

Yes. Meta says Pixel Helper “automatically updates to Meta Ads Data Advisor” and that “All existing diagnostic features continue to work,” with automated setup added on top (Meta).

Should a clinic let Data Advisor set up events automatically?

Review them instead. The option is pre-selected for new Pixels set up through Data Advisor since August 3, 2026, and you can deselect it during setup or turn it off later in Events Manager (Meta). Meta's terms bar data that “includes or is based on, directly or otherwise, health information” (Meta).

Can Data Advisor connect my CRM to Meta?

Yes. Meta lists Salesforce and HubSpot CRM integrations through the Conversions API (Meta). Decide which CRM fields may reach Meta before you approve one on a clinic site.

Does Data Advisor work with an ad blocker on?

Not fully. Meta lists “Your ad blocker disabled, so the extension can detect Pixels and events on your website” among the requirements for its setup and automation features, and its test steps say to deactivate your ad blocker (Meta).

How do I see which trackers my site loads?

Data Advisor shows Meta Pixels and their events. To see every tracker on a page, run Curve's free website scan, or follow how to see which trackers your website loads.

Does Curve Compliance sign a BAA?

Yes. Curve Compliance signs a BAA on every plan, and Curve's team does the setup, typically live in about a week (Directory entry).
