How to ask Meta to review a health and wellness data source category (and when not to)

On this page

Only if the category is wrong, and only through Meta's own review. If Meta assigned the category, you can't edit it yourself: Meta says "you will not be able to modify a Meta-assigned categorization for your data source." In Events Manager, open the dataset's Settings, go to Manage data source categories, click View details and then Request review. Meta will email you its decision. If you run a clinic, a telehealth service or a pharmacy, Meta's own definition probably covers you. In that case, your time is better spent adjusting campaigns within the category than asking for a review.

Whatever Meta decides, Curve Compliance helps you keep your tracking compliant. Curve's team reviews what your website sends to Meta, Google and TikTok with you, then rebuilds your conversion tracking so it is HIPAA-compliant and keeps your campaigns optimizing within your category. Personal identifiers are SHA-256 hashed as Meta's API requires, and a BAA is signed on every plan. Book a call with Curve.

First, decide whether the category is actually wrong

Meta's Health and wellness category covers a data source that "Is associated with medical conditions or specific health statuses, provider/patient relationships, services for accessing personal health information, or health-related products and services". The examples Meta gives are "a patient portal, wellness tracker, telemedicine platform, pharmacy, health insurance marketplace, or condition-specific support group".

Meta assigns categories "based on the topics related to the data source and the products and/or services provided". A review looks at the same data source. If your site's topics and offer haven't changed, neither have the facts behind the category.

  • The category probably fits if patients book consultations or appointments with a provider, you treat or prescribe for conditions, you sell health products tied to conditions, or visitors log in to see health information.
  • A review may be worth asking for if the data source's topics and offer have no link to medical conditions, health statuses, provider/patient relationships, or health-related products and services.

Who can request the review

Meta says you need "full control of the business portfolio or an admin role on the ad account that owns the dataset that's associated with your data source." If you don't have that access, ask someone in your business who does. Don't hand login details to an outside party to do it for you.

The exact steps in Events Manager

If you or a colleague assigned the category yourselves, Meta says you may be able to change it without a review: select the arrow next to View details, click Edit Category, choose the correct category and save. Do that only when the original choice was a mistake, not to leave a category that describes your business.

  1. Open Meta Events Manager and click Datasets in the left menu.
  2. Select the name and ID of your dataset, then click the Settings tab.
  3. Scroll to Manage data source categories and click Manage. Meta notes you may not see this section if your data sources aren't in any category.
  4. Check each data source, its category and its status.
  5. For a Meta-assigned category you believe is inaccurate, click View details, then Request review. Meta shows a message confirming the request.
  6. Wait for Meta's decision by email. To check on a review you've already requested, click View details again.

What to do while you wait

Meta's help pages don't give a timeline for category reviews. Don't plan budgets around a date.

  • Keep campaigns on events and objectives Meta still accepts in your tier. What Meta restricts for health and wellness data sources lists what still works.
  • Keep fixing what your site sends. Meta says its systems "are not a substitute for your own compliance mechanisms", and a review doesn't change your obligations under the Meta Business Tools Terms.
  • Review custom events. Any data restriction blocks them until you confirm them. See why Meta blocked your custom events.
  • Measure bookings and purchases in your own reporting, so your decisions don't wait on Meta.

When not to request a review, and what not to do instead

  • Don't request a review when your business matches Meta's definition. The category describes what you offer, and a review is for categories that are inaccurate.
  • Don't rewrite the site to hide what you offer while selling the same services. The category follows the products and services provided.
  • Don't self-categorize a dataset out of Health and wellness, or pick a self-assigned category that doesn't fit.
  • Don't move the site to a new domain, or create a new dataset, pixel or ad account, to escape the category. See whether to open a new ad account after a restriction.
  • Don't rename events to get restricted data through. Meta says names "must not reflect, imply, or be based on any prohibited information".

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to get Meta's health and wellness category removed?

Only if Meta agrees on review that the category is inaccurate. You can't edit a Meta-assigned category yourself.

How long does a category review take?

Meta's help pages don't give a timeline. They say you'll be notified through email of the decision.

Can I request another review if Meta keeps the category?

Meta's category help pages describe one Request review action and an email decision. If the category stands, plan your campaigns within it.

Does Meta's category affect Google or TikTok?

No. It is Meta's categorization of your data source. Other platforms apply their own health policies.

How can Curve help while we wait for Meta's decision?

Curve's team reviews what your website sends to Meta with you and rebuilds your conversion tracking so it is HIPAA-compliant and keeps your campaigns optimizing on the events your tier still accepts. Setup is done for you, typically live in about a week (it varies case by case). Book a call with Curve.
