Reddit didn't approve our clinic's or telehealth ad

The notice
Not approved: Your ad has been rejected.
On this page

Reddit's review rejected the ad, and for healthcare advertisers the cause is usually one of three things. Healthcare providers, telemedicine services, pharmacies and pharmaceutical advertisers "must be managed by a Reddit Sales Representative", so a self-serve campaign for those services won't go live on its own. Reddit prohibits targeting by health data and never allows targeting communities in its Medical & Mental Health, Addiction Support or Trauma Support categories. And weight loss, supplement and cosmetic ads carry their own claim rules, including no before-and-after photos. Read the rejection email for the specific reason, talk to Reddit sales about the managed path, fix the targeting and creative, and resubmit.

Curve Compliance helps clinics measure every channel they add, Reddit included. Curve's team replaces the pixels on your site with HIPAA-compliant, server-side conversion tracking, detects PHI-like patterns before data reaches an ad platform, and keeps attribution through booking tools such as IntakeQ, Calendly and Jane. It is typically live in about a week, with a BAA signed on every plan. Book a call with Curve.

What Reddit's healthcare policy requires

"Reddit allows advertisements promoting healthcare products and services, with restrictions." The requirements that apply to most clinics and telehealth brands:

  • Providers: "All healthcare providers and medical services must be appropriately licensed and/or approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or other relevant authority. Healthcare providers and medical services advertisers must be managed by a Reddit Sales Representative."
  • Clinics: "Medical professionals and clinics must be appropriately licensed by all necessary and relevant regulatory authorities."
  • Telemedicine: "Telemedicine providers must possess industry standard certifications. Medical professionals engaged in telemedicine services must be appropriately licensed as they would be at a regular clinic. Telemedicine advertisers must be managed by a Reddit Sales Representative."
  • Prescription and compounded drugs: "Prescription drugs must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)." "Compounded drugs must be produced by pharmacies accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) or facilities approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."
  • Online pharmacies must be accredited by the NABP.
  • Addiction centers: "Addiction centers must possess industry standard certifications and must be run by licensed medical or health professionals."

Targeting Reddit never allows for health

Reddit's targeting guidelines prohibit "targeting users based on the following sensitive categories", including "Genetic, biometric, or health data" and "Physical and mental health". They also say: "You may not target communities in the following categories under any circumstance", and list Addiction Support, Mature Themes and Adult Content, Medical & Mental Health, and Trauma Support.

These rules "apply to both positive targeting (i.e. including attributes) and negative targeting (i.e. excluding attributes)." Build audiences from interests and communities outside those categories, and let the ad's message do the qualifying.

Weight loss, supplement and cosmetic ads

Weight loss ads follow Reddit's rules for prescription drugs and supplements, and Reddit says: "We never allow weight loss products that contain unsafe or dangerous ingredients such as ephedra, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), anabolic steroids, or any other substance that has been subject to government or regulatory action." Weight loss ads must also:

  • "Not imply unrealistic, unsafe, or atypical weight loss outcomes"
  • "Not include before and after photos"
  • "Not reinforce unrealistic or unhealthy beauty standards, or contain body-shaming language"
  • Cosmetic procedure ads carry the same photo and beauty-standard rules, and must "Not make false or exaggerated claims" or "promise unexpected or unrealistic results".
  • Supplement ads must "Not imply that a supplement is as effective or more effective than an FDA-approved drug or medical treatment".

Get the ad approved

  1. Open the rejection email. Reddit says to "Check your rejection email for the specific reason and resolution steps."
  2. If you are a healthcare provider, telemedicine service or pharmacy, contact Reddit sales to set up a managed account. Reddit's review tips say some ads "must be pre-approved and managed by your Reddit sales representative."
  3. Have your licenses and certifications ready. "Some ads, like those involving healthcare products or financial services, require certifications before going live."
  4. Remove any targeting of health data or of the prohibited community categories.
  5. Fix the creative and the landing page against the weight loss, cosmetic and supplement rules.
  6. Resubmit. "Reviews are typically completed within one day but may take longer", and Reddit recommends submitting "at least 48 hours before your planned start date".

Frequently asked questions

Can a clinic run self-serve Reddit ads?

Reddit says "Healthcare providers and medical services advertisers must be managed by a Reddit Sales Representative", and the same applies to telemedicine, pharmacy and pharmaceutical advertisers. Contact Reddit sales to set that up.

Can we target health-related subreddits?

No. Reddit says you may not target communities in its Medical & Mental Health, Addiction Support or Trauma Support categories "under any circumstance", and it prohibits targeting by health data.
