AI citations are the links an AI assistant shows as the sources behind its answer, such as the citations in a ChatGPT search answer or the supporting links in a Google AI Overview, and for a healthcare brand they are the clearest sign that an AI answer drew on your page. Curve Compliance helps healthcare brands see how often AI answers cite their site and name them, and improve both. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. The managed service is Curve AEO, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you. (If you came here to learn how to cite ChatGPT in a paper, that is a style-guide question; this guide is about earning citations.)

What counts as an AI citation

Each assistant shows sources a little differently. For ChatGPT, OpenAI says "Responses that use web search may include citations," and selecting Sources shows "cited sources and other relevant links" (OpenAI Help Center). Google calls them supporting links: to be eligible in AI Overviews or AI Mode, "a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central).

Most AI answers cite several sources at once. Pew found 88% of Google's AI summaries cited three or more sources, and the typical summary ran just 67 words (Pew). So a citation is a shared slot in a short answer, not a top position on a page of ten.

A citation is also different from a mention. An answer can name your practice without linking to you, or cite your page while recommending someone else. Ahrefs found most cited websites weren't mentioned by name in the answer itself (Ahrefs). Track both: how often answers cite your site, and how often they name you. For the share-based view, see AI share of voice.

Who gets cited for healthcare questions today

Big health publishers and institutions lead the citations on general health questions. These are the clearest public numbers.

An audit of 3,611 health questions found Google's AI Overviews cited only 44.4% of the top five search results, and overrepresented commercial health publishers such as WebMD and Healthline at the expense of academic and government sources (Agnoli et al., preprint). For a practice, the lesson is where to compete. National publishers win "what is" questions. The questions only you can answer well are local, service-specific and practical: who treats this near me, do you take my insurance, what happens at the first visit. Those are the questions where a practice's own pages and listings have the most to offer. See where AI gets healthcare answers for each assistant's sources.

Why AI citations come and go

Citations move a lot. Ahrefs asked the same questions daily for 20 days across five AI tools and found 50% to 83% of citations were gone the next day. About 75% of those came back within the 20 days, and about half returned within three days (Ahrefs). More than half of Gemini's and Copilot's answers had no citations at all, which makes their citations look even less stable.

Two patterns stand out. On Google's AI tools and ChatGPT, when a question named a brand, that brand's website stayed cited for all 20 days in roughly 30% of cases, four to seven times more often than the average cited website (Ahrefs). And fresher pages were cited more: the pages AI assistants cite are 25.7% fresher on average than pages in Google's organic results, though Google's AI Overviews cite content 16 days older on average (Ahrefs).

Rankings explain only part of it. In Ahrefs' study of 15,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, just 12% of cited links ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt on average; Perplexity was highest at 28.6%, and the others hovered around 8% (Ahrefs). For healthcare AI Overviews, BrightEdge found about 24% of cited sources also rank in the top 10, the highest of nine industries (BrightEdge).

How accurate are AI citations?

Not as accurate as they look. Testing popular LLMs on common medical questions, Stanford researchers found "between 50% and 90% of LLM responses are not fully supported, and sometimes contradicted, by the sources they cite," and even GPT-4o with web search left about 30% of individual statements unsupported (Wu et al., Nature Communications). The 2026 AI Overview audit estimated that 56.7% of cited statements were supported by their cited page (Agnoli et al., preprint). OpenAI itself warns that "Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect" (OpenAI Help Center).

Patients rarely check. In rater8's 2026 survey, 60% of patients who used AI to research providers trusted the summary they got without verifying it (rater8). So the best page to be cited from is one that states the fact plainly, close to the question, in words that support the answer exactly. If AI already gets something wrong about you, see how to fix wrong AI answers.

Do AI citations bring patients?

Fewer clicks than you might hope, but more than an uncited page gets. In browsing data on Google searches across all topics, Pew found users clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits to pages with one (Pew). Yet Seer Interactive found being cited in an AI Overview brings 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited (Seer Interactive). In health care, AI referrals are still only 0.64% of all website traffic (Conductor).

When AI visitors do arrive, they behave much like search visitors. Across 54 websites, Amsive found LLM referrals converted at 4.87% and organic search at 4.60%, a difference that was not statistically significant (Amsive). The real value of a citation is often the decision it shapes before any click.

How to get cited by AI: seven steps

  1. Let the search crawlers in. OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and Googlebot for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Check robots.txt and your CDN, and that key pages allow snippets.
  2. Answer near the top. Put a direct answer under a heading that matches the question, then the detail. Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces for AI, so write for patients and let the answer lead (Google).
  3. Cite your sources. In the GEO study, citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics were the top methods, lifting visibility in AI-generated answers by 30% to 40% on the researchers' benchmark, and by up to 37% in a test on Perplexity. In the same tests, citing sources gave a 115.1% increase for sites ranked fifth in search (Aggarwal et al., GEO), so lower-ranked sites have real room to gain.
  4. Keep facts plain and consistent. Services, hours, insurance and providers in text on your site, and the same on your listings, so every source an assistant checks agrees.
  5. Refresh what matters. Update a page the day a fact on it changes: a new provider, new hours, a new insurer.
  6. Show up where AI already looks. Listings and YouTube are among the most cited sources in the studies above. Earn real mentions there; Google says seeking inauthentic mentions "isn't as helpful as it might seem" (Google).
  7. Match titles to questions. Ahrefs found closer title and description matches to the question went with slightly longer-lasting citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Clinicians review anything medical before it goes live.

AI citation tracking: what to record

Because citations move daily, one check tells you little. A useful record follows the same questions over several days and keeps these fields:

RecordWhy it matters
The exact question, with the city in itLocal answers change by place, so test the way a patient asks.
The assistant and the dateChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity and Gemini cite different sources.
Whether your site was cited, and which pageShows which pages AI cites and which never get picked.
Whether your practice was namedA mention without a citation, or the reverse, points to different fixes.
Which competitor or publisher was cited insteadTells you whose page to out-answer, or where to be listed.

Keep test questions to marketing questions, never anything about a real patient.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. Introducing Curve AEO: a service that helps you understand how your brand appears in AI search, with a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

What You Get with Curve AEO:

  • AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
  • Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
  • Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
  • Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress.

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

Curve reports mention rate (how often AI answers name you), citation rate (how often they cite your site) and share of voice (your share of the mentions among the brands you compete with). It shows where competitors are named and you aren't, who leads each topic, and which sources AI cites.

It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan. Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. See AI Visibility for the feature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AI citations?

AI citations are the source links an AI assistant shows with its answer, such as the links in ChatGPT search answers or the supporting links in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. For a healthcare brand, being cited means the assistant used your page to answer a patient's question.

How do I get cited by AI?

Let the search crawlers reach your site, answer each patient question in a clear, self-contained passage, cite your own sources and keep your facts consistent. In the GEO study, citing sources gave large gains to lower-ranked sites (GEO study).

What is AI citation tracking?

It means asking AI assistants the same questions over time and recording which sites they cite and whether they name your brand. Because many citations change daily, it only works across several days of answers (Ahrefs).

Why does AI cite Mayo Clinic and WebMD instead of my practice?

For general health questions, large health publishers and institutions hold the biggest shares of AI citations (Conductor). Practices have the most to offer on local, service-specific questions, so build pages for the questions only you can answer.

Do AI citations bring traffic?

Some. Across all topics, Pew found people clicked links inside Google's AI summaries on 1% of visits (Pew), but cited pages earn more clicks than uncited ones on the same results (Seer Interactive).

Why did my AI citation disappear?

Usually because AI answers change from day to day. In Ahrefs' study, 50% to 83% of citations were gone the next day, but about 75% of those came back within 20 days (Ahrefs), so wait a few days before changing the page.

Is AI Visibility a Curve feature or a managed service?

Both. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO.
