Orthodontic marketing is how a practice reaches the two groups who choose an orthodontist, parents deciding for a child and adults deciding for themselves, and both now compare their options in AI assistants before they book a consultation. Curve Compliance helps orthodontic practices see what ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini say when those families and adults ask. AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. Curve AEO is the managed service: a team that handles the strategy and execution for you.

Two buyers, two sets of AI questions

Adult demand keeps growing. The AAO's 2025 Economics of Orthodontics and Patient Census Survey estimates that AAO members are treating approximately 1.91 million adults in the United States, up significantly from 1.64 million in the previous survey (American Association of Orthodontists). Adults research for themselves. Parents research for a child, and many of them are in their 30s and 40s.

Pew found 34% of US adults use AI chatbots for at least one of eight health or medical reasons, including 44% of adults ages 18 to 29 and 40% of those ages 30 to 49 (Pew Research Center). Trust in those answers is rising for provider research: in rater8's 2026 survey, 27% of patients said they trust AI-generated search results more than standard Google results, up from 19% in rater8's 2025 survey, though the answer options changed between years (rater8).

Every row is a question your team already answers on the phone. Writing those answers down, with your orthodontists approving anything clinical, is most of the work.

Comparison questions are where AI does the most work

Orthodontic choices are comparisons. Google says "AI Mode is particularly helpful for queries where further exploration, reasoning, or complex comparisons are needed," and that both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, "issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" (Google Search Central). One question about aligners can pull in pages about treatment options, local offices and what patients say. More on this: query fan-out in healthcare.

Ranking well on Google does not mean the assistant will cite you. In Ahrefs' study of 15,000 prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, only 12% of cited links ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt on average; Perplexity was highest at 28.6%, and the others hovered around 8% (Ahrefs).

ChatGPT is the assistant that sends the most visits. Conductor found ChatGPT drives 83.8% of AI referral traffic in the health care industry, while AI referrals overall were 0.64% of health care website traffic (Conductor). The share is small, but these visitors arrive having already compared you. See ChatGPT visibility for healthcare.

Directories and your own site both count

Orthodontics has a specialty directory that patients use. In the AAO survey, 24% of responding orthodontists include the AAO's Find an Orthodontist tool when they ask patients how they found the practice, up from 20% in the previous survey. The AAO estimates that, in the year its survey covered, 44,000 patients were examined and 28,000 started treatment with an AAO member after finding their orthodontist through the tool (AAO). A complete, current profile there is part of being findable.

Your own site carries real weight too. Yext's study of 17.2 million AI citations found healthcare had the narrowest gap between assistants of any sector, with the business's own content making up 34.60% (Claude) to 40.45% (Gemini) of citations (Yext Research). For orthodontic groups and DSOs, every office needs its own clear page. See dental AI visibility, AI visibility for multi-location groups and Curve for DSOs.

Large national brands publish a great deal about aligners. A local practice is in a stronger spot on the questions that need a local, specific answer: who treats children nearby, which office has evening hours, what a consultation involves. For why AI names one practice over another, see why AI recommends your competitor.

Being cited, not just ranked

When an AI Overview appears, being cited helps. Seer Interactive found that being cited in an AI Overview brings 120% more organic clicks per impression than not being cited, though still 38% fewer than when no AI Overview appears (Seer Interactive). Seer notes stronger brands may simply be cited more, so read it as a correlation.

Families also keep reading after the answer. Among Americans who search online for health information, 65% say they always or often follow links to specific websites after an AI-generated response, and only 8% rarely or never go beyond it (Annenberg Public Policy Center). That is what people say they do, but it fits a long decision like orthodontic treatment. They often arrive better prepared, too: 46% of Americans who used AI for health information said it made them feel more confident talking with or asking questions of a provider (West Health-Gallup).

Keep the pages current. Ahrefs found the pages AI assistants cite are 25.7% fresher on average than pages in Google's organic results, though Google AI Overviews cite slightly older pages (Ahrefs). When you add a treatment option, an office or new hours, update the page the same day.

An orthodontic AEO checklist

  1. Two audiences, two page sets. Pages written for parents of children and teens, and pages written for adults, each answering the questions that group asks.
  2. Comparison pages your orthodontists write. Braces and aligners, orthodontist and general dentist: describe the options you offer, with no outcome promises.
  3. Credentials in plain text. Specialty residency, board certification where it applies, and AAO membership on every orthodontist bio.
  4. A first-consultation page. What happens, who the patient meets, how long it takes and how to book.
  5. A financing and insurance page. Payment options and insurance in plain words, so AI can repeat them accurately.
  6. Directory profiles kept current. Your AAO Find an Orthodontist profile and Google Business Profile should match your site for every office.
  7. Each office on its own page. Address, hours, orthodontists and services for each location, so AI can answer "near me" questions for each one.

How Curve Compliance helps

AI Visibility is a feature in Curve Compliance, and Curve also offers it as a managed service. In Curve, the feature is called AI Visibility (AEO), and the managed service is Curve AEO. We handle your AEO strategy, content creation, and optimization, with a dashboard that shows how your brand appears in AI answers and tracks progress over time.

What You Get with Curve AEO:

  • AI Visibility Tracking. See how often your brand appears in AI-generated answers.
  • Optimize Your Site for AI. We make technical improvements that help AI assistants find, read, and understand your content.
  • Competitive Insights. Understand who's getting recommended instead of you.
  • Content Roadmap. Identify gaps and prioritize opportunities to improve performance.

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Curve's team turns those insights into action: building your strategy, creating and optimizing content, and tracking progress. It's available to practices and clinics, health systems and multi-location groups, and agencies. Agencies can use AI Visibility for their clients, or have Curve's team run it for them.

It shows where competitors are named and you aren't, who leads each topic, and which sources AI cites. It measures what each published piece changes. For an orthodontic practice, that means seeing who AI names for the parent questions and the adult questions, and what changes as you publish.

It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.

In one AI Visibility program we've run, for a HIPAA-focused healthcare software brand, AI assistants named or cited the brand in more than half of their answers to its 40 core buyer questions about five weeks in. Across 184 buyer questions, its site was cited in more AI answers than any competitor's, more than 2.5 times as many as the nearest one.

Built for healthcare marketers, Curve connects the entire patient funnel in one platform: paid ads, web analytics, and now AI search. AI Visibility is available on request: book a call to get started. See AI Visibility and Curve AEO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthodontic marketing in AI search means giving ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini clear, current facts about your practice, so they can name you when a parent asks about a child's treatment or an adult asks about their own. Parent questions and adult questions are best handled as two separate sets.

Do parents use AI to choose an orthodontist?

This Pew report does not break out parents, but 40% of US adults ages 30 to 49 use AI chatbots for at least one of eight health reasons (Pew Research Center). Many parents of children in treatment fall in that age range.

How can a local orthodontist stand out from national aligner brands in AI answers?

Answer the questions only a local practice can: who treats children nearby, which office has evening hours, which orthodontists see adults and how a first consultation works. Keep those facts the same on your site and every directory profile.

Does the AAO Find an Orthodontist profile matter?

Yes. AAO survey data shows patients find orthodontists through the tool, and AI answers to local healthcare questions often draw on directories, so keep the profile matching your site.

Should we publish braces versus aligners pages?

Yes, if your orthodontists write or approve them. Describe the options your practice offers and how a consultation works, and leave out outcome promises.

Give each office its own page with its address, hours, orthodontists and services, and check what AI says about each office separately.

What does Curve's team do in Curve AEO?

With the managed service, Curve's team sets up your questions, competitors and topics, writes the pages on your roadmap, and makes the technical fixes that help AI assistants read your site. Your clinicians review and approve anything medical before it goes live. Each month, Curve's team walks you through your results on a call and sends a one-page report.

Does Curve AEO send patient data to AI assistants?

No. It's built for healthcare: only the marketing question you track is sent to AI assistants, screened for PHI first, and never anything about a patient. Curve is SOC 2 Type II and signs a BAA on every plan.
